"Dear God, if you listening now/ I need ya do a thing for me," croons Anthony Hamilton on "Pray for Me," and the sudden transition from formal humility to casual audacity encapsulates the achievement of this quietly thrilling album. Like his musical compatriot Jill Scott, this gritty, church-trained North Carolina native is often categorized as "neo-soul. " But the smooth-groove classicism here is just part of Hamilton's mature command of the form, with none of neo-soul's studied Afro-Sheen patina.

This year's "VH1 Divas" is celebrating soulful voices — and the cities where soul flourished. Mary J. More than 422,000 people took part in the 2011 Essence Music Festival held over the Fourth of July weekend in New Orleans.
