The reaction to tuning in to a NESN Red Sox telecast and realizing someone other than Jerry Remy is handling the color is practically second nature by now. First: "Who's this with Don Orsillo? Where's Jerry?" Then: "I hope he's OK. " The pattern has become all too familiar in recent seasons as Remy, the former second baseman who has developed a large and loyal following during his 25 years as an incisive and sometimes droll commentator on Red Sox broadcasts, has dealt with health matters that have caused him to miss portions of the schedule.

Six full baseball seasons have come and gone since Sean McDonough’s acrimonious departure as the play-by-play voice of Red Sox television broadcasts, a position he held with a distinction worthy of iconic predecessors such as Curt Gowdy and Ned Martin for 17 years. Since that day in December 2004, when a reporter’s phone call informed him that NESN would not pick up the option on his contract, McDonough has been out of mind to a segment of Red Sox fans. But he was never out of sight to well-rounded sports fans, having maintained a steady presence at ESPN, where his...

As Brad Penny walked off the field, failure in his wake, boos suffused the hot, sticky air in Fenway Park. He had just begun a meltdown that was far from over, an utter disaster of a game that damaged the Red Sox’ chances of inserting themselves back into the division race. It erased the memory of a just-finished sweep over clearly inferior competition, and left the Sox 7 1/2 games behind in the American League East. In a game that started as a lovefest with the return of Jerry Remy to the NESN booth, the disappointment grew quickly.
