Bob Melvin has little to explain about Oakland's losses the past two days: Four hits in two games is not going to amount to much. Jarrod Parker had his strongest outing yet for the Athletics in a 3-1, 11-inning defeat to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, yet he didn't get enough support from the offense. "We're not stringing hits together and getting guys on base," Melvin said. "We have to swing the bats better. We're going to face a lot of good pitchers. There's no excuse.

Jered Weaver shrugged off his career-best 17th win of the season as if it were his first. With his team locked in a tight race with AL West-leading Texas, the Los Angeles Angels ace will have plenty of time to relish his achievements in the offseason. Weaver may also have to come back on three days' rest for his next start, so any individual celebration will have to wait. "We haven't gotten to our goal yet, but from a personal standpoint it's pretty cool," Weaver said after pitching seven innings in a 4-1 win over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.

Jered Weaver simply decided his loyalty to the Los Angeles Angels was worth much more than a few extra millions in free agency. The Angels formally announced their five-year, $85 million deal with Weaver on Tuesday, keeping their ace with the club through 2016. Weaver realizes he probably could have made a bit more as an unrestricted free agent after next season, but he doesn't care. The Southern California native is happy living in Newport Beach, playing for the Angels and eschewing the drama of high-pressure East Coast markets.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett was scratched from the All-Star game Tuesday night after feeling soreness in his left knee while warming up in the bullpen. “I could have pitched. I’m just not comfortable going out there and getting hurt in an All-Star game and costing myself starts in the second half,’’ Beckett said. “I think that’s how everybody should be. This game does mean a lot with home-field advantage and everything but at the same time there are some things that are ahead that are a little more important.’’ The right-hander...

NEW YORK -- Chone Figgins and Casey Kotchman homered, Vladimir Guerrero doubled twice, and the Los Angeles Angels kept winning against the New York Yankees, battering them, 10-6, last night. "We've held our own against them," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. More than that, actually. The Angels are the only AL team to own an edge over New York since Joe Torre became its manager before the 1996 season. The Angels are 56-52 against the Yankees in the regular season in that span -- they've also beaten them twice in the playoffs.

Michael Young homered and drove in three runs and Josh Hamilton hit his 10th home run for the Rangers.

Jered Weaver walked off the mound singing along as "Hit the Road Jack" blared over the speakers at Rangers Ballpark. In his second start since throwing a no-hitter and going for a 6-0 start, Weaver instead matched a career high by giving up eight runs in 3 1-3 innings. His shortest outing since 2009 came in the Angels' 13-6 loss to AL West-leading Texas on Sunday night. "That was not what I wanted to do," Weaver said. "But it was definitely time to hit the road. " The Angels, who had won three of their previous four series before getting to Texas, are in last place and eight...

Jered Weaver allowed three hits over six innings in his first start since no-hitting the Twins last week to lead the Los Angeles Angels to an 8-3 victory over Minnesota on Monday night. Weaver (5-0) gave up one run with two walks and two strikeouts and Alberto Callaspo had a homer and three RBIs for the Angels, who have won six of eight as they try to climb out of the cellar in the AL West. Erik Komatsu had two of the Twins' three hits against Weaver, but the Twins didn't have much more success against Weaver than they did on Wednesday.

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Dave Weaver was in his usual seat, 20 rows behind home plate, drinking a beer and shouting instructions to his son in the quiet lulls between pitches. His wife, Gail, was alongside him, calmly enjoying a little night baseball. It really could have been any night in three lives filled with similar evenings at ballparks all across Southern California. Instead, Jered Weaver made an ordinary Wednesday at Angel Stadium unforgettable for the close-knit family that put him on that mound.

One night after Jered Weaver threw the majors' second no-hitter of the season, it was back to normal for the scuffling Angels. Los Angeles managed just three hits against Brandon Morrow, and J.P. Arencibia hit a three-run homer to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-0 victory on Thursday. The Angels supported Weaver with 15 hits in a 9-0 win over Minnesota on Wednesday, but they struggled against Morrow, who earned his second career shutout. His two-run double off Weaver highlighted a three-run first inning. Weaver, expected to start on opening day, gave up three runs on four hits and two walks in his second spring start.

Weaver pitched the second no-hitter in the majors in less than two weeks, completely overmatching Minnesota and leading Los Angeles to a 9-0 win over the Twins on Wednesday night.
