Jered Weaver shrugged off his career-best 17th win of the season as if it were his first. With his team locked in a tight race with AL West-leading Texas, the Los Angeles Angels ace will have plenty of time to relish his achievements in the offseason. Weaver may also have to come back on three days' rest for his next start, so any individual celebration will have to wait. "We haven't gotten to our goal yet, but from a personal standpoint it's pretty cool," Weaver said after pitching seven innings in a 4-1 win over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.

Jered Weaver simply decided his loyalty to the Los Angeles Angels was worth much more than a few extra millions in free agency. The Angels formally announced their five-year, $85 million deal with Weaver on Tuesday, keeping their ace with the club through 2016. Weaver realizes he probably could have made a bit more as an unrestricted free agent after next season, but he doesn't care. The Southern California native is happy living in Newport Beach, playing for the Angels and eschewing the drama of high-pressure East Coast markets.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett was scratched from the All-Star game Tuesday night after feeling soreness in his left knee while warming up in the bullpen. “I could have pitched. NEW YORK -- Chone Figgins and Casey Kotchman homered, Vladimir Guerrero doubled twice, and the Los Angeles Angels kept winning against the New York Yankees, battering them, 10-6, last night. "We've held our own against them," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. More than that, actually. The Angels are the only AL team to own an edge over New York since Joe Torre became its manager before the 1996 season. The Angels are 56-52 against the Yankees in the regular season in that span -- they've also beaten them twice in the playoffs.

Brandon Snyder homered and had a career-high six RBIs against his former team, and the visiting Texas Rangers beat Baltimore, 14-3, Monday night to end the Orioles' five-game winning streak. Snyder, the Orioles' top draft choice in 2005, hit a two-run single in the second inning, a three-run drive in the sixth, and an RBI single during a seven-run ninth. He played in only 16 games with Baltimore before the Rangers got him for cash considerations in January. Michael Young homered and drove in three runs and Josh Hamilton hit his 10th home run for the Rangers.
