Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury said Wednesday that he does not need surgery on his partially dislocated right shoulder and will return this season. But Ellsbury does not to know when that return might be. "We're icing, doing a lot of icing to get the swelling out," he said. "Once the swelling [subsides], I can start getting into exercises and that sort of thing with the shoulder. As far as the timeline, we don't have one right now. " Ellsbury had not spoken to reporters since he was injured while trying to break up a double play Friday against the Rays.

Red Sox general manger Ben Cherington said the team didn't expect to add an outfielder to replace Jacoby Ellsbury, who had MRI results on his subluxed right shoulder examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles. "Dr. Yocum is looking at the films we did here in Boston as a second look," Cherington said. "We don't have another exam planned. We've got to let the inflammation and the symptoms subside and let [Ellsbury] get a little more comfortable before we decide range-of-motion stuff.

TAMPA, Fla. — Some random thoughts on the Red Sox written while dodging raindrops in the Sunshine State: • In Philadelphia, it has been speculated that the Red Sox should swap Kevin Youkilis for Joe Blanton. It was suggested here over the winter several times that trading Youkilis for pitching made sense. But the Sox need to get more than Blanton, who would get diced up in the AL East. Better to get a few prospects and build for the future than a 31-year-old who isn't going to make a difference.

Podsednik was hitting .203 with four RBIs and six stolen bases in 22 games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The speedy Podsednik, 36, last appeared in the majors in 2010 with the Royals and Dodgers. Josh Beckett's three wins this season have come against teams that are a combined 49-52. Take away the April victory against the Tampa Bay Rays, and that record is 26-48 (Minnesota, Seattle). That's one way to look at Beckett's bumpy season thus far. It's something else to point out that after yesterday's stellar outing against the Quadruple A Seattle Mariners, Beckett now has five quality starts on the season. That's the same amount as Jon Lester, James Shields, and David Price.
