The Phoenix Coyotes had been waiting so long for a new owner that they barely blinked when NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced a tentative deal was in place. They had become immune to the ownership saga and, besides, had more pressing business in front of them: a spot in the Western Conference finals. Capping a momentous day, the Coyotes celebrated news of a new owner with a 2-1 win over the Nashville Predators on Monday night to reach the conference finals for the first time in 33 years as an NHL franchise.

While Whitford will be costarring as a city councilman from whom Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler, above with Whitford) seeks help, we're hoping the former Josh Lyman gets to cross paths with his old castmate Rob Lowe in one of those patented "West Wing" walk-and-talks. ROSTRAVER, Pa. - Heavy snow buildup from recent storms likely contributed to the collapse of an ice rink roof, causing a panicked evacuation but no injuries, a fire official and the building’s owner said. “We believe it was excessive weight from the copious quantities of snow that we’ve had over the past 10 days,’’ Jim Murphy, who has owned the Rostraver Ice Garden since 1993, said yesterday. “We believe a laminated wood truss broke and that caused two other ones to go and the roof to pancake in that area.’’ The region has gotten more than 2 feet of snow in the past...

WASHINGTON — A water main break iced over a major commuter highway in Washington’s Maryland suburbs yesterday, snarling morning traffic and swamping parked cars. Authorities said the pipe ruptured in an office park that backs up to Capital Beltway in Prince George’s County and sent water down a small hill onto the road, where it froze. Officials closed all southbound lanes along a 2-mile stretch of Interstate 95 for several hours. Water from the broken main shot 8 or 9 feet in the air, said Lyn Riggins, a spokeswoman for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

Milton special Town Meeting members unanimously approved a warrant article this week that will allow the town to lease the Max Ulin Ice Rink from the state for $1 a year for up to 25 years. Curry College currently manages the rink and will most likely continue to do so with the new agreement. Governor Deval Patrick signed a legislative amendment late last year allowing Milton, with Town Meeting approval, to lease the rink from the state, which handed over management of the rink to the town after losing nearly $400,000 a year running it. - Natalie Feulner

It’s good to see Matthew Perry and his sarcastic mug again, after the failure of “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip’’ in 2007. Most of his “Friends’’ friends have had safe landings since their decade in the hitcom stratosphere — Courteney Cox in “Cougar Town,’’ Matt LeBlanc in the fantastic “Episodes,’’ Lisa Kudrow with “The Comeback,’’ and Jennifer Aniston in the movies and the tabloid void. But Perry has remained adrift, like Chandler Bing still fending off failure and feelings with one-liners.
