In a study published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that eating cholesterol-lowering foods like nuts, soy protein, and certain fiber-rich items result in bigger drops in "bad" LDL cholesterol than avoiding...

Repairs to the aging Sagamore Bridge during the spring have slowed traffic leaving Cape Cod to a crawl most nights and backed it up for miles on Sundays, culminating in a Mother's Day morass when the stalled line of cars stretched past multiple exits on Route 6 and triggered all-day gridlock on nearby Route 6A. "Whoever conceived of this plan should be fired," said Anne Kilguss, a Boston social worker and psychotherapist with a second home in...

Police are hoping the threat of losing their permits will be enough to thaw the frosty relationship of two Pennsylvania ice cream truck drivers accused of trying to run each other off the road. The Herald-Standard of Uniontown reports police told the rival vendors to chill out after a dispute Wednesday night. Authorities say the wife of one vendor told police the other man tried to run her husband off the road. The implicated ice cream driver disputes the woman’s account, saying it was her husband who tried to force him off the road.

Friendly's, the famed maker of Fribbles, is switching from scoops to supermarkets as a way to boost its struggling ice cream business and expand the brand across the country. While the Wilbraham company's restaurants have attracted attention lately for their failures - about 100 of 500 locations closed after the chain filed for bankruptcy protection in October - Friendly's has been doing better beyond its own walls, signing ice cream contracts with major retailers such as Walmart and Food Lion.

At first glance, Fortessa's Grand City ice cream spoon ($3.99) looks like a sandbox toy for a very small child. Modeled after a gelato spoon, the shovel-shaped, shallow bowl has a flat end, which is good for dipping into ice cream or sorbet, and means the ice cream slides onto your tongue without interference from a metal lip. The long handle works for reaching the bottom of a parfait or stirring a tall glass of lemonade. Made of polished stainless steel, the spoon is a happy marriage of form and function.

When I mentioned jimmies , the long-established localism for chocolate sprinkles, in a recent column, it was just as a passing example; I didn’t mean to reopen an etymological can of worms. But a few days later, along came an e-mail from Ron Slate of Milton, repeating the rumor that has dogged our candy terminology. “My mother told us never to use the word ‘jimmies’ because it is an epithet for African-Americans,” he wrote. “So we always said ‘sprinkles.’ ” Even before that tale got abroad, jimmies was trailing clouds of factoid and fancy.

Flip through any cookbook of mid-20th century America and you're bound to come across a recipe for baked Alaska. It was all the rage for a time. But as quickly as it flamed up, it soon disappeared. Now it's back. The TV drama "Mad Men" has prompted retro-themed parties that often include baked Alaska on the menus. In a recent episode, in fact, the frozen dessert is served at an awards dinner. A Discover card commercial features the flamed ice cream/meringue confection, and it's showing up on cooking shows, made by celebrity chefs.
