What happens to your resume after you click the "send" button? For most job seekers, the process is a mystery: Faceless human resources staffers poring over piles of CVs, deciding which applicants get an interview, and which get a generic "Thanks for your interest" e-mail. I spent last week talking to chief executives and human resources executives about how resume-sifting works at Massachusetts companies, from accounting firms to makers of organic crackers. Here are the 13 most surprising things I learned, and most useful pieces of advice I heard.

A woman who was caught up in a cheating scandal in the Atlanta school system has been dismissed from a consulting job in Bridgeport. Bridgeport Schools Superintendent Paul Vallas tells the Connecticut Post that he made the decision because he does not want any controversy. Millicent Few was the human resources director for the Atlanta system before resigning in July amid a standardized-test cheating scandal that reportedly involved 178 teachers. Selectmen have voted to approve Martin McNamara of Clinton as Boylston's new town administrator. McNamara currently is the director of human resources in Stoughton. McNamara replaces Nancy Colbert Puff, who departed from the post over the winter. Matt Gunderson

Officials have released the names of three finalists for the town administrator position, on the heels of Nancy Colbert Puff's resignation from the post in February, said Interim Town Administrator Lori Esposito. The three candidates are Martin McNamara, the director of human resources in Stoughton; Anita Scheipers, the assistant town administrator in Lincoln; and Andrew Sheehan, the Townsend town administrator. - Matt Gunderson
