Add another chapter to the Los Angeles Angels' frustrating start. Pitcher Clayton Richard scored the winning run from first base on an error by fill-in left fielder Howie Kendrick with two outs in the 13th inning and the San Diego Padres beat the Angels 3-2 on Sunday in an unusual extra-inning game. By taking two of three from the Angels, the Padres had their first winning homestand of the season, going 3-2 against the Dodgers and Angels. It was just their third series win in 14 this season.

The Los Angeles Angels fired hitting coach Mickey Hatcher on Tuesday after Albert Pujols and many of his teammates got off to dismal offensive start this season. Hatcher's dismissal was announced about 90 minutes after the Angels had 12 hits in a 4-0 victory over Oakland. A day earlier, Los Angeles lost 5-0 to the Athletics — its major league-worst eighth shutout loss already this season. Los Angeles promoted hitting coach Jim Eppard from Triple-A Salt Lake to replace Hatcher, who had been with the Angels since manager Mike Scioscia — his former Dodgers...

The Los Angeles Angels placed infielder Howie Kendrick on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with right hamstring tightness. The move, announced before the game against Oakland, is retroactive to May 20. Kendrick has missed the past seven games after his hamstring tightened last week in Seattle. Kendrick ran before the game and manager Mike Scioscia said he was feeling better, but general manager Tony Reagins indicated the team wasn’t satisfied with his progress. Kendrick is the Angels’ leading hitter with a .322 average.

The Los Angeles Angels spotted the Kansas City Royals a four-run lead, then mounted a comeback that was derailed when Bobby Abreu was thrown out at the plate. Abreu was waved home by third base coach Dino Ebel on a single to left field by Erick Aybar with one out in the sixth inning and two runs in, but Alex Gordon made a perfect one-hop throw to Brayan Pena for the second out. Mark Trumbo ended the inning with a popup, and the Angels got only one more hit the rest of the way in a 4-2 to the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

If they want to play in October, the Los Angeles Angels have a lot of work to do in the final week of the season. Edwin Encarnacion hit a game-ending home run in the 12th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Los Angeles 4-3 on Thursday night, dealing the Angels another blow in their chase for a playoff berth. "We just let it slip away from us today," infielder Howie Kendrick said. The defeat dropped the Angels three games behind idle Boston in the wild card race. Tampa Bay, which won in New York earlier in the evening, closed to within two games of the...

Albert Pujols welcomed his new hitting coach to town with a go-ahead three-run homer and Vernon Wells added a two-run shot to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 7-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. Jim Eppard was with the Angels for the first time as hitting coach after replacing Mickey Hatcher, who was unceremoniously dumped Tuesday night by new general manager Jerry DiPoto 1 ½ months into Hatcher's 13th season on the job. The team's offensive struggles led to the firing, including Pujols' slow start after signing a 10-year, $240...

Jered Weaver walked off the mound singing along as "Hit the Road Jack" blared over the speakers at Rangers Ballpark. In his second start since throwing a no-hitter and going for a 6-0 start, Weaver instead matched a career high by giving up eight runs in 3 1-3 innings. His shortest outing since 2009 came in the Angels' 13-6 loss to AL West-leading Texas on Sunday night. "That was not what I wanted to do," Weaver said. "But it was definitely time to hit the road. A shocker. The Red Sox did not uncork more bubbly last night. They did not smoke cigars and spray suds over one another. Jonathan Papelbon did not dance on the Fenway lawn for the 11 o'clock news. The Los Angeles Angels postponed Boston's clinch party with an excruciating, 12-inning 5-4 victory in Game 3 of the Division Series. The game was played in front of the largest Fenway crowd (39,067) since World War II, lasted 5 hours 19 minutes, and ended at 12:48 this morning when Jered Weaver - making the first relief appearance of his career - got Alex Cora to ground to third base.

For the Angels, in so many ways, it had come down to mistakes. And there had been plenty, from Vladimir Guerrero's flop on the bases in Game 1 to Torii Hunter's flubs in the outfield in Game 2 and again in Game 3, to Howie Kendrick's futility at the plate, to Hunter running into an out at second base on a single to left in the ninth. These were not the moments of a 100-win team. Still, there were hard words before Game 3 coming from the Angels manager. "We're not getting eliminated tonight," Mike Scioscia said.

The power has gone out at Progressive Field. And the Cleveland Indians were in the dark once again Saturday in a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The Indians' streak without a home run reached 10 games in their latest defeat. Cleveland hasn't hit a homer in 10 games, its longest streak in nearly 30 years. To break it down even further, the Indians haven't homered in 93 innings and 334 at-bats. Cleveland hit a home run in its first nine games of the season, but no Indians batter has homered since Carlos Santana's three-run blast in the fifth inning...
