Writing "hot sauce" may have landed one man in hot water after police saw him walking out of a tunnel on MBTA tracks along Huntington Avenue early Sunday morning. The man had black and white paint on his hands and told police that he "wrote one thing" in the tunnel, according to police. Alex Wan, 23, of Boston, was arrested for malicious defacing of property and standing, walking, or riding a vehicle on railroad property. In his backpack, Wan had four aerosol cans of spray paint, three paint markers, two permanent markers, and three bottles of shoe polish, Transit Police said.

THE PROBLEM with hazing — one of the many problems with hazing — is that it feels like something that happens to somebody else. It's easy to sneer at the Boston University students who were found shivering and sniffling off-campus last week: stripped to their underwear, tied to each other, with welts on their backs and hair shaved from their heads, covered in honey and hot sauce. These were college students. College students drink too much. College students have an impressive capacity to be stupid.

Police sought criminal complaints Tuesday against 14 suspects accused of beating and binding five Boston University students and then covering them in hot sauce and honey as part of a fraternity hazing scheme. Investigators are seeking to charge the suspects - most, if not all, of whom are BU students - with hazing, assault and battery, and failure to report hazing. The complaints were the latest in a series of recent scandals at the school, including two high-profile accusations of sexual assault.

MUCH AS I LOVE GRITS when they're fresh out of the pot, leftover grits may be even better. When hot grits cool, they become firm enough to slice, and frying the slices adds a golden crust. Fried grits are great plain, with syrup or hot sauce or marinara, with cheese melted on one side as the second side cooks, or as a starchy accompaniment to stews and braises. The technicalities: Pour the leftover grits into an oiled loaf pan or a bowl, cover, and leave in the refrigerator to set. I cut slices about ½ to ¾ inch thick and fry them in butter (for flavor and browning)
