WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the nation's top military leaders pleaded Wednesday for Senate approval of a long-spurned high seas treaty, arguing that the pact will boost national security and American jobs. In a joint appearance before Congress, Clinton, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army General Martin Dempsey, made the case for the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which has been in force since 1994.

WASHINGTON - Dorothy Rodham - a suburban Chicago homemaker who endured a devastating childhood and served as an inspiration to her daughter, Hillary Rodham Clinton, one of the most accomplished women in American government - died yesterday. She was 92. Mrs. Rodham spent decades as a familiar but unflashy presence alongside her daughter, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and her son-in-law, former president Bill Clinton. She accompanied them to Arkansas, where Bill Clinton was governor, and then to Washington as the Clinton family fortunes rose.

Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota on Thursday became the latest former rival to endorse presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Four months after ending her own bid for the White House, Bachmann joined Romney at an afternoon campaign event in Portsmouth, Va., where she called him "a man who will preserve the American dream of prosperity and liberty. The secretary of state is firmly embracing an Internet parody that purports to show her texting various politicians and celebrities, shooting them down with snappy retorts. Clinton invited the creators of the ‘‘Texts from Hillary" Tumblr website to the State Department on Tuesday and shared a laugh with them. And, she even submitted her own fake exchange. The site has become an Internet sensation since it was launched last week.

CONCORD, N.H. - New Hampshire officials agreed yesterday to conduct complete hand recounts of Tuesday's Democratic and Republican presidential primaries. Representative Dennis Kucinich, who received less than 2 percent of the Democratic vote, and Albert Howard of Michigan, who received about 40 votes in the GOP primary, each paid a $2,000 fee to start the process, officials said. Both candidates agreed in writing to pay the full cost of the recounts, Secretary of State William Gardner said.

It was just a week ago that the photo and Tumblr site quickly exploded into a Facebook sensation. A picture taken in October 2011 of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton texting on a C-17 plane started making the rounds online. On Wednesday of last week, Stacy Lambe and Adam Smith, two Washington D.C.-based communication professionals, started the Tumblr site "Texts From Hillary" (www.textsfromhillaryclinton.tumblr.com). Barack Obama swept to victory in yesterday's South Carolina Democratic primary on the strength of support of African-Americans, voters who were looking for a candidate who could bring change, and voters who believe the economy is the most important issue facing the country, according to preliminary data from exit polls conducted for the Associated Press and television networks. Black voters in South Carolina voted overwhelmingly for Obama, with 8 in 10 supporting him. Nearly all the rest voted for Hillary Clinton.
