“This song is about never getting jobs and forming a band and stuff,’’ said singer and keyboardist Alaina Moore midway through Tennis’s set at Great Scott on Monday. Not that anybody in the audience needed to be told that. The trio’s unfailingly sunny sound conjured up nothing so much as a beach party happening way off in the distance. Work simply doesn’t exist in the same orbit. Even so, it’s a party that seemed perpetually just out of reach, no matter how long you walk along the shoreline toward it. Coated with reverb and sung in a murmur that largely blended into the haze,...

ALLSTON -- Their debut album won't even be out in the States for three more months, and already Editors, a young, fabulously fretful foursome from Birmingham, England, are getting song requests shouted at them. It happened in Los Angeles last week, where reportedly 400 people were turned away from each of the band's two sold-out club shows. And it happened here Sunday night when a zealous crowd crammed into Great Scott, swarming the stage to get a closer look at this shiny, shimmery new slice of UK exotica making its maiden trip to Boston.

Other Lives' "Tamer Animals" is already a widescreen record, a tug-of-war between acoustic melodies and orchestral arrangements that gradually swell and lift the songs like helium balloons, free to float into the ether. For shorthand, I like to think of the Oklahoma indie rockers as a hybrid of Radiohead and Midlake - they're out there, but still within reach. "Tamer Animals," the group's sophomore album released early last year, cemented that cinematic aesthetic. Its intimacy was shot through with grand intentions.

The traditional path to getting on the permanent guest list at a rock club takes a lot of work - what with the long hours of required schmoozing, the late nights, and probably more cans of cheap beer than are advisable. A new promotion from the indie-rock clubs Great Scott and T.T. the Bear's Place called the Bridge Badge aims to streamline that process for avid showgoers and would-be scenesters. The badges, which went on sale last week (at $149, available through www.cqpresents.com)

Detroit Rock City met Allston Rock City Tuesday night, as three bands from the former lined up at Great Scott. Headliners the Von Bondies came up in the garage-rock revival a few years ago, though not to the dizzying level of former Motor City pals the White Stripes. A widely reported altercation between Jack White and Bondies singer-guitarist Jason Stollsteimer killed that tie. In fact, the strawberry-blond Stollsteimer doesn't look like he backs down from many challenges - such as the fact that it was a freezing-cold Tuesday night and Great Scott was only a third full.

Equal billing doesn't necessarily mean equally thrilling. The Double and Celebration co-headlined a show at Great Scott on Thursday night. Despite great debut CDs from each of these new indie rock bands -- the Double has released "Loose in the Air" on Matador, Celebration's self-titled effort is on 4AD -- only one act translated its songs into a captivating performance. New York City quartet the Double never really got off the ground. Its labors seemed just that, heavy, burdensome, without spark or cohesion.

Watching the members of the Boston-by-way-of-New-Hampshire band Wild Light bounce around the stage at Great Scott Wednesday night, it was easy to see why the Killers thought the group would make an ideal opening act on their upcoming spring tour. The buzz-building quartet offer top-shelf musical goods in an attractive package: energetic songs with earworm hooks, singalong choruses, and rhythmic swagger that can kill at a club - as it did at Great Scott - but will also hold up well in a hockey rink full of people waiting for the headliner to come on. Plus, Wild Light's...
