Swiss authorities say rescue forces used helicopters to evacuate 75 passengers from a stalled cable car near the glitzy mountain resort town St. Moritz. Rescue services said Sunday the Diavolezza gondola was stuck halfway up the mountain and it took about three hours to evacuate all passengers. It was not immediately known what had caused the cable car's defect. Rega rescue services say three helicopters were used and nobody was injured in the incident. The gondola named Diavolezza — or "Little Devil" in Italian — rises to almost 3,000 meters (10,000 feet)

I had not skied Loon in years, 17 to be exact. I remember because I was skiing with my daughter in a backpack (that is no longer allowed). Loon keeps popping up in my ski report research, often with the most open ski acreage in New Hampshire, thanks to an investment of over $20 million in the past five years - much of it in snow production. Loon was still blowing snow on several trails that already had serious base depths last Friday, demonstrating their power of 600 new tower guns (that is not a typo)

HIGHLAND, Ind. -- A 9-year-old boy was killed Friday after he fell more than 25 feet from the gondola of a rotating carnival ride during a festival at a local park. "Rider error, operator error, equipment failure -- we don't know at this point," said Peter Hojnicki, chief of police in this town just south of Chicago. Dakota Stevenson of Gary, Ind., north of Highland, was pronounced dead at a hospital in Munster, just west of Highland, after he fell Friday night from the Wind Shear, a ride in which passengers are strapped into a rotating gondola...

Dallas could be getting another towering Ferris wheel-type attraction in an effort to boost downtown tourism. Dallas County commissioners on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to a 174-foot "observation wheel" near the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza. The president was assassinated in Dallas in 1963. The proposal is backed by Great City Attractions, which has developed similar observation wheels across Europe, and the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau. Each air-conditioned gondola would provide audio information, in multiple languages.

LINCOLN, N.H. -- Labor Day weekend here marks summer's last fling. Help the kids make the most of it with games, contests, and more at the Family Fun Fest at Loon Mountain. Bring the family together next Saturday afternoon for the three-legged race. Work up an appetite? Then enter the corn-on-the-cob-eating contest. Follow that up with the watermelon-seed-spitting competition. The four-piece bluegrass band Hot Day at the Zoo blends rock, jazz, and folk on an outdoor patio. Sunday's activities are a bit more athletic.

Find bliss in the Cyclades Islands, overnight on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, go tubing down a lazy river in Tennessee. They are among the 15 summer sensations that await you this season: BE NEIGHBORLY Few summertime bashes rival a country’s birthday party in the national capital. But instead of heading south to Washington this year, journey north to celebrate Canada Day in Ottawa on July 1. The flag-waving and fireworks may be familiar, albeit maple-leafed, but the parading Mounties and Changing of the Guard are purely Canadian.

Don’t say you weren’t warned. New England can be a pretty scary place at the end of October with ghoulies, ghosties, long-leggedy beasties, and things that go bump in the night. Add a few celluloid nightmares, mix well with hayrides, long shadows, and a big dose of animatronics, and you have deliciously frightful scream scenes designed to scare you out of your skin. Here are 13 ways to get a charge out of Halloween. Holiday central Salem owns Halloween like the North Pole owns Christmas, although it’s best not to think too hard about the rather tenuous link...

LONG BEACH, Calif. - If it’s Wednesday evening, it must be Italy. As the setting sun cast a golden glow over the canal, Eric Sjoberg let our gondola come to rest and launched into “Santa Lucia.’’ His rich tenor floated away on the breeze. Taking care not to spill our wine, my friends and I applauded vigorously. Venice? No. We were gliding through the canals around Naples Island, reclaimed marshland that has become one of Long Beach’s most upscale communities. “They built the canals in the 1920s to take around potential...

CONWAY, N.H. - What began with a teenage boy's curiosity has grown into a 10-year-old effort to document hundreds of New England's lost ski areas, including more than 170 in Massachusetts. Jeremy Davis makes a living in meteorology in New York, but has spent his free time over the last decade maintaining the New England Lost Ski Areas Project, a website devoted to preserving the history of defunct ski areas. The seeds were planted in 1991, when at age 14, Davis took a family ski trip to New Hampshire's Mount Washington Valley.

Talk about timing. Sunday's northeaster, which brought more than a foot of snow to spots in New England, was a lot easier to take for most people than last Thursday's commuting headache. The blustery storm carried strong winds, ice, and sleet, and made young skiers and riders count the days until the upcoming vacation week. Those high winds derailed Loon Mountain's gondola. About 75 people were stranded for 90 minutes before being evacuated, as the winds forced the mountain to close for the day. But the incident in Lincoln, N.H., paled in comparison to another...
