I WAS a Bruins fan when Nixon was president and goalie Gerry Cheevers was God. Forty years later we have Tim Thomas, another beloved guy who stops flying objects with his face, only Thomas decides to take a stand by refusing an invitation to visit the White House by the duly elected president of the United States. There's a difference between respecting the politician and showing respect for the ideas and symbolism behind the office he or she holds. I had the opportunity to visit the White House during the presidency of George W. Bush.

Poor Stephen Collins. Not the veteran "Seventh Heaven" actor, but the United States congressman from Pennsylvania, whose woes are at the center of "State of Play," an enjoyably trashy thriller that opens today. Representative Collins (Ben Affleck) has been having an affair with a pretty young staffer who turns up dead, minutes before he's scheduled to lead hearings probing possible corruption by an American defense contractor in Iraq. She had been doing research on the matter but, conveniently, fell in front of a speeding D.C. subway.

The great thing about class warfare is that it makes you rethink your place in society. Right now I am wondering: How can I join the storied "1 percent"? You have to admit, it sounds pretty alluring. Everybody wants to be you, but it's a pretty exclusive club. At any one time, 99 percent of the population is locked out. It's like Mensa, the high-IQ society for the top 2 percent of America's brainiacs, except that you can buy your way in. As a 1 percenter, you own 17 percent of the country's wealth, and the little people own the rest.

Presumably at a salary substantially less than the $1 million he was paid by WTKK-FM (96.9), Jay Severin is about to resurface on Boston airwaves. Starting tomorrow, Severin, who was fired by WTKK last April for comments he made about women, will host a show from 3-6 p.m. on WXKS-AM (TALK 1200). "I am a fan, friend, and follower of TALK 1200'S Jeff Katz , Glenn Beck , Rush [ Limbaugh ], and Sean Hannity ," said Severin, whose ideology is in line with those Obama bashers.

WASHINGTON — In the shadow of the Capitol and close to the election, comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert entertained a huge throng that rallied yesterday for “sanity,’’ poking fun at the nation’s diversity and its ill-tempered politics. In one shtick, Stewart and his associates queried some crowd-goers to identify themselves by category, eliciting answers from attendees such as “half-Mexican, half-white,’’ “American woman single’’ and “Asian-American from Taiwan.’’ “It’s a perfect demographic...

WASHINGTON — Glenn Beck says it is a coincidence his Restoring Honor rally tomorrow at the Lincoln Memorial will take place on the anniversary and at the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream’’ speech. But he is hardly apologizing for the connection. “This is going to be a moment that you’ll never be able to paint people as haters, racists, none of it,’’ he says of the event featuring Sarah Palin and other conservative political and cultural figures.

NEW YORK - Bob Inglis, a Republican congressman from South Carolina, frustrated by a restive crowd at a recent forum to discuss health care changes, suggested people turn off the TV when Fox News Channel’s Glenn Beck came on. Big mistake. Judging by the escalating boos and catcalls, squirting lighter fluid on burning coals would have been wiser. Beck is a hero to many people who are not buying the Age of Obama, and so is Fox. The network was already on pace for its best ratings year even before the health care debate sent viewership jumping in a traditionally slow...

Glenn Beck, who burned bright and burned fast at Fox News Channel, does his final show on the network Thursday before going into business for himself. Beck is setting up his own Internet network, GBTV, and will begin streaming a two-hour live show there in September. His fans can pay $9.95 a month for access to GBTV, or $4.95 to see just his daily show. Beck will continue a separate syndicated radio program. Beck’s conservative populism resonated almost immediately with Fox viewers when he started in January 2009, drawing audiences unseen before in a late afternoon time...

SACRAMENTO — Originally billed as a chance to reflect on the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a series of raucous Tea Party rallies around the country yesterday ended up focusing almost entirely on an event still to come — the Nov. 2 election. “We are your everyday, average, church-going families, we represent the majority of people in this nation, and we’re ready to take back our government,’’ said Pam Pinkston of Fair Oaks, Calif., one of about 4,000 people who attended Sacramento’s “United to the Finish’’ gathering.
