PLYMOUTH — When the Mayflower II sailed from England to Plymouth in 1957, the crew of the replica 17th-century vessel tossed some bottles overboard into the Atlantic Ocean. Each bottle contained a message signed by everyone aboard the ship, including their mascot, a little kitten named Felix. As the men watched the bottles float away and disappear into the waves, many wondered where the notes would end up, or if they would ever reach the shore. Somehow, two bottles survived.

WINCHESTER — The world’s largest assembly of antiques sellers is Paris’s Marché aux Puces, the Flea Market. Of course, there are fleas — and then there are fleas. It must be said that the rooms and displays seen in Christopher Rauschenberg’s 21 large color photographs (they’re 2 feet by 3 feet) are pretty tony looking. There’s nothing dark or musty or junky about the mirrors, frames, furniture, statuary, and various bric-a-brac lovingly rendered by Rauschenberg. Clearly, he’s the one you want to do the catalog when you have your estate sale.

By Kim Foley MacKinnon, Town Correspondent In the past decade or so, the Roslindale Village Main Street Farmers' Market has grown from little more than a flea market in a parking lot to a vibrant, hugely popular event in Adams Park, with vendors galore, live music and activities for kids. The 2012 season kicks off on June 2 and runs through October 27, rain or shine, every Saturday. This year, 26 new vendors have signed on to showcase their goods at the market, which means shoppers will, over the course of the season, be able to visit more than 55 different vendors.

Flea markets often conjure images of sunny weekend afternoons and shoppers hunting for antiques and other collectibles. But for some Shrewsbury residents, a proposed flea market on Route 9 means only cars, cars, and more cars. "I'm probusiness. Everyone needs to make a living. I just think a flea market belongs somewhere else," said George Jreij, who lives on Oak Street, directly across from an entryway to the proposed flea market. "I don't think Oak Street can handle more traffic," said Jreij, who said his three children wouldn't be able to ride their bicycles on the street or play...

The Planning Board voted unanimously on April 12 to approve the site plan for a proposed flea market along Route 9, subject to parking measurements to determine whether more spaces are required. The site now has approximately 276 parking spaces. The proposed market still requires approval from the Board of Selectmen and the Conservation Commission. If approved, the market would open on weekends. The plan has elicited concern from neighbors regarding the potential for increased traffic on residential streets near the commercially zoned site.

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. -- Set on several acres on the Old Post Road near Charlestown Beach , the General Stanton Inn hosts a popular weekend flea market. When the season opened in April, we booked a Friday night at the inn to catch the next day's early-bird bargains. It was pouring rain when we checked in, but the Saturday forecast was optimistic. "The dealers are already calling," the clerk told us. "I told them I'd be here. " Perhaps to cheer us up, she told us to show our room key to receive a $5 per person discount at dinner.

DESIGNER PHOEBE LOVEJOY RUSSELL of Lovejoy Designs had two goals to meet in sprucing up the living room of this classic 1927 Colonial in Wellesley. The owners wanted to honor the home's origins and incorporate elements of French flea-market style. With its neutral backdrop, the room called for splashes of color and character, so Russell introduced red accents and played up some of the homeowners' antique collectibles. YESTERDAY AND TODAY The eclectic array of furnishings includes a coffee table — long ago used as a cart in a manufacturing plant — scored at...
