The Cleveland Indians have acquired reliever Jairo Asencio from the Atlanta Braves for cash. Asencio was on the Braves' restricted list all of 2010 after it was discovered he had come to the U.S. as Luis Valdez and claimed to be three years younger. The Indians are already dealing with a similar case as the pitcher formerly known as Fausto Carmona was actually Roberto Hernandez and three years older. Hernandez remains in the Dominican Republic attempting to obtain a work visa.

CLEVELAND — Fausto Carmona pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout in more than two years, slowing Minnesota’s surge this month and leading the Cleveland Indians to a 2-0 win over the AL Central-leading Twins last night. Carmona (12-14) had lost his last six decisions, falling 1-0 in a complete-game start against Seattle his last time out. The righthander dominated the Twins, who just completed an 8-1 homestand and lost for only the second time in nine games in September.

Michael Young hit a three-run double to go over 100 RBIs for the second time in his career and the AL West-leading Texas Rangers completed a three-game series sweep of Cleveland with a 7-4 victory Thursday night. Josh Hamilton homered for the third straight game and Adrian Beltre also homered in extending his career-best hitting streak to 19 games. CLEVELAND -- Fausto Carmona's sinker dropped, it dipped, it dived, and it devastated the Minnesota Twins. "It's not normal," Minnesota's Torii Hunter said of Carmona's go-to pitch. "He's not even human. It was so scary, I thought I was hung over. " Throwing almost nothing but sinkers, Carmona pitched a four-hitter for his first career shutout and beat Johan Santana for the second time in less than a month as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Twins, 2-0, to finish off a three-game sweep.

From year to year and game to game, the Cleveland Indians never knew what to expect from Fausto Carmona. On Thursday, he stunned them again. Carmona, the Indians' opening-day starter last season, was arrested in the Dominican Republic for allegedly using a false identity. Officials in his native country are contesting his real name and birthdate. Police spokesman Maximo Baez Aybar said Carmona was arrested in Santo Domingo outside the U.S. consulate, where he had gone to renew his visa.

Colleges When Yale star quarterback Patrick J. Witt announced he withdrew his Rhodes Scholarship application to play against Harvard six days later in The Game, his choice capped weeks of admiring national attention. But The New York Times reports that Witt was no longer a contender for the scholarship, because several days earlier, according to people involved on both sides of the process, the Rhodes Trust had learned through unofficial channels that a fellow student had accused Witt of sexual assault, and Rhodes informed Yale and Witt that his...
