The Cleveland Indians have acquired reliever Jairo Asencio from the Atlanta Braves for cash. Asencio was on the Braves' restricted list all of 2010 after it was discovered he had come to the U.S. as Luis Valdez and claimed to be three years younger. The Indians are already dealing with a similar case as the pitcher formerly known as Fausto Carmona was actually Roberto Hernandez and three years older. Hernandez remains in the Dominican Republic attempting to obtain a work visa.

CLEVELAND - Fausto Carmona went from bug bites to goosebumps. On the same mound where he fought off swarming insects during last season's AL playoffs, Carmona pitched seven strong innings in his season debut and Grady Sizemore had three RBIs to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 7-2 win over Chicago last night. With his sinker dipping and dancing away from Chicago's hitters, Carmona allowed one run and four singles. He got 16 of his 21 outs on grounders, struck out four, and kept Jim Thome in the park, something C.C. Sabathia couldn't do in the opener when Chicago's DH homered twice.

Colleges When Yale star quarterback Patrick J. But The New York Times reports that Witt was no longer a contender for the scholarship, because several days earlier, according to people involved on both sides of the process, the Rhodes Trust had learned through unofficial channels that a fellow student had accused Witt of sexual assault, and Rhodes informed Yale and Witt that his candidacy was suspended unless the university decided to...

CLEVELAND — Fausto Carmona pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout in more than two years, slowing Minnesota’s surge this month and leading the Cleveland Indians to a 2-0 win over the AL Central-leading Twins last night. Carmona (12-14) had lost his last six decisions, falling 1-0 in a complete-game start against Seattle his last time out. The righthander dominated the Twins, who just completed an 8-1 homestand and lost for only the second time in nine games in September.

CLEVELAND -- Fausto Carmona's sinker dropped, it dipped, it dived, and it devastated the Minnesota Twins. "It's not normal," Minnesota's Torii Hunter said of Carmona's go-to pitch. "He's not even human. It was so scary, I thought I was hung over. " Throwing almost nothing but sinkers, Carmona pitched a four-hitter for his first career shutout and beat Johan Santana for the second time in less than a month as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Twins, 2-0, to finish off a three-game sweep.

The Cleveland Indians' bullpen was untouchable in the first game of Tuesday's day-night doubleheader. Three relievers combined to hold Chicago without a hit in the final three innings in a 4-3 win. Asdrubal Cabrera's solo home run and six strong innings from Fausto Carmona played major roles in the victory. The second game didn't go nearly as well. Although the Indians built an early 4-0 lead, four relievers allowed three earned runs in 3 2-3 innings to waste a solid starting effort by rookie right-hander Zach...

The Cleveland Indians are resetting their goals for the final two weeks of the season. Fausto Carmona, far from the All-Star season he had a year ago, gave up six runs over six innings and the Indians lost 7-4 to the AL West-leading Texas Rangers, wrapping up a three-game series sweep. That cut Detroit's magic number for clinching the AL Central to one. "All you can think is you failed to achieve your goal, which is to win the division," Indians manager Manny Acta said.

Clinging to any hope of staying in the AL Central race, the Cleveland Indians needed a big performance from their starting pitcher Tuesday night. Fausto Carmona didn't come close to giving it to them. The right-hander allowed five runs in the first inning and didn't get through the second in a 10-1 drubbing that dropped the Indians 8 ½ games behind first-place Detroit in the division. "We were never in it," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "Fausto didn't have it from the get-go.

Fausto Carmona figured out the Chicago White Sox just in time to keep the Cleveland Indians in second place. Carmona allowed four hits over 8 1-3 innings and the Indians beat the White Sox 4-1 on Wednesday night. The win kept Chicago from passing the Indians and moving into second in the AL Central. "I thought Fausto was magnificent," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "He had a good power sinker working for him. Fifteen groundouts and just a fantastic job by him on the mound.
