This loss seemed a lot less important to the White Sox. Chicago played with heavy hearts Wednesday night after the death of longtime pregame instructor Kevin Hickey at age 56 following a lengthy illness. Gavin Floyd gave up a three-run homer to Albert Pujols and a two-run shot to Vernon Wells in the 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. "I knew Hick very well. He cared about baseball and he loved baseball — but first and foremost, he loved White Sox baseball," catcher A.J. Pierzynski said.

Alberto Callaspo hit a go-ahead two-run double in the 11th inning, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 on Wednesday. Kendrys Morales drew a one-out walk in the 11th against Justin Norberto (0-1) and was lifted for pinch-runner Peter Bourjos, who moved to third on Howie Kendrick's two-out single. Callaspo then drove them both home with a double to left. Jordan Walden (1-1) pitched a 1-2-3 10th and Ernesto Frieri finished for his first major league save on a day the Angels couldn't deliver enough to back starter Jered Weaver.

Dan Haren and the Los Angeles Angels are struggling. Haren lost his fourth straight start Saturday night as the Angels were defeated 3-2 by the San Diego Padres. Alexi Amarista scored San Diego's first two runs against his former team and then doubled in the go-ahead run off Haren in the seventh inning. "I'm better than this," said Haren, who has lost seven of nine decisions dating to last year. "I feel good, health-wise, at least from two starts ago. I thought I looked better as the game went on. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to win games.

When all was said and done, the decision to trade shortstop Marco Scutaro saved the Red Sox pennies, at least with regard to the luxury tax. The question now concerns how the Red Sox intend to replace him, something for which some of us are willing to give the Sox almost an entire season to answer. After all, if Jose Iglesias is the starter by, say, Aug. 1, then all of this may make a good deal more sense. At the moment, the chance of that happening seems incredibly slim, if for no other reason than the wretched .235 batting average and .554 OPS that...

ANAHEIM, Calif. - They were baseball's best over the long, hot summer. Then came October, and another big chill. The Los Angeles Angels seemed to have it all: a powerful lineup strengthened by newcomers Torii Hunter and Mark Teixeira, an impressive rotation headed by John Lackey, and a bullpen anchored by record-setting closer Francisco Rodriguez. They won 100 games for the first time in franchise history, with eight of those victories coming in their nine meetings with the Red Sox, and baseball observers praised the Angels as a team that did the little things correctly.

Brett Anderson tossed three-hit ball over eight scoreless innings and Andy LaRoche drove in three runs to help the last-place Oakland Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Thursday. The A’s split their four-game series with the second-place Angels, who fell to 4-7 in their past 11 games. Anderson (3-4) struck out four and walked three to beat the Angels for the first time in six career starts. The left-hander had been 0-3 in his previous five starts. Anderson finally got some run support from his teammates, who had supplied two runs or less in...

Billy Butler hit a game-winning, two-run homer in the ninth inning Wednesday to give the Kansas City Royals a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Jeff Francoeur singled with one out before Butler connected off Scott Downs (3-2). The ball hit behind the outfield padding in left-center field and bounced back into play, and the umpires initially ruled it a double before video showed it to be a home run. Tim Collins (3-2), the fifth Royals pitcher, pitched 1 1-3 flawless innings for the win. Felipe Paulino, who made his first start of the season...

Albert Pujols welcomed his new hitting coach to town with a go-ahead three-run homer and Vernon Wells added a two-run shot to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 7-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. Jim Eppard was with the Angels for the first time as hitting coach after replacing Mickey Hatcher, who was unceremoniously dumped Tuesday night by new general manager Jerry DiPoto 1 ½ months into Hatcher's 13th season on the job. The team's offensive struggles led to the firing, including Pujols' slow start after signing a 10-year, $240...

David Price earned high praise from the opposing manager. The two-time AL All-Star pitched a five-hitter for his second career shutout, Tampa Bay homered four times, and the Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-0 on Tuesday night. Price (3-1) gave up all singles in his first shutout since a four-hitter against Toronto on April 25, 2010. His only other complete game came July 2, 2010, against Minnesota.

The Los Angeles Angels are going to try Mark Trumbo at a couple different spots so they can get his bat into their powerful lineup. It looks as if third base could be an option. Trumbo made a splendid diving grab to his left in the second inning Saturday, robbing Joaquin Arias of a single during the Angels' 9-5 victory over a split-squad of San Francisco Giants. "You don't call it the hot corner for nothing," Trumbo said. Trumbo also homered and C.J. Wilson pitched three scoreless innings in his second spring outing for Los Angeles, which gave the left-hander a $77.5 million,...

It didn't take much for Jake Arrieta to unravel after he held the Angels to just one hit over the first four innings: A bad pickoff throw, a couple of well-placed hits and suddenly Los Angeles had a five-run inning. That was all the offensive support Jered Weaver needed en route to his first complete game of the season, a 6-3 victory over the Orioles that included a gamble by Baltimore manager Buck Showalter that worked to perfection. Arrieta, coming off a no-decision at Toronto in which he tied a career high with 114 pitches over 6 2-3 innings, lasted just 4 1-3...
