The Phoenix Coyotes avoided a sweep with a gutty performance in Los Angeles. They couldn't do it again back home in the desert, though the disappointment shouldn't linger too long. This was, after all, the best season in the franchise's 33-year NHL history. Unable to capitalize on numerous chances early and late, the Coyotes were knocked out of the playoffs when Dustin Penner scored 17:42 into overtime to give the Los Angeles Kings a 4-3 victory in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday night.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Although the San Jose Sharks seem destined to be postseason players for years to come, they wasted an opportunity this spring that might never come again. Team Teal's roller coaster season flew off the tracks Wednesday, with a 2-0 loss in Edmonton that capped a stunning playoff collapse for many experts' favorites to reach the Stanley Cup finals. Four straight losses were perversely fitting for the Sharks, who flopped out of the gate last fall before finally picking up momentum with their tremendous play down the regular-season stretch.
