Zdeno Chara is still going strong more than 1,000 games into his brilliant career. Boston's star defenseman was honored before the game for reaching that milestone then assisted on three goals to help the surging Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2 on Tuesday night. "Everything he did was simple, efficient, and he was rock solid," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Obviously, this was a special night for him and he wanted to make sure that everything he did was good and positive.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed goalie Mathieu Garon and right wing Michel Ouellet. The free-agent deals were announced on Friday. Garon agreed to a two-year, $2.6 million deal and will be the backup to Dwayne Roloson, who is returning to the Lightning on a one-year, $3 million contract signed Thursday. Garon was 10-14-6 record last season with Columbus. Ouellet got a one-year, two-way contract. He spent the past two seasons playing in Europe. The Lightning signed right wing Brett Connolly, their 2010 first-round draft pick, to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Ryan Malone, Steven Stamkos, and Teddy Purcell also scored for the Lightning. Dwayne Roloson stopped all 29 shots he faced after coming in to relieve Mathieu Garon. Martin St. Louis scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period, Steven Stamkos notched his team-record 53rd goal and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3 on Monday night. Teddy Purcell scored in the sixth round of a shootout and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on Thursday night. Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis also scored in the extra session, helping the Lightning win the shootout 3-2. Ladislav Smid pulled Edmonton even at 2 with 3:47 left in regulation with his first goal in 38 games, coming from the low left circle off a nice pass by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The Buffalo Sabres are making a serious push for a postseason berth. Marcus Foligno and Jason Pominville each scored twice and the Sabres beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 7-3 Monday night. "We were able to capitalize on a couple of rushes and made some good plays on our power play," Pominville said. Alex Ovechkin scored on a wrist shot at 4:09 of overtime, and the Washington Capitals came back to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 Thursday night, snapping a three-game losing streak. Ovechkin is a two-time NHL MVP mired in his poorest season. He celebrated the end of his three-game point drought by racing over to leap into the boards after taking Dmitry Orlov's assist and netting the 12th overtime goal of his career. Once Evgeni Malkin got angry, the game really got out of hand. Malkin had his ninth career hat trick, Jordan Staal added two goals, and the Pittsburgh Penguins won for the fifth time in seven games by routing the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning, 8-1, yesterday. Chris Kunitz, Matt Cooke, and Pascal Dupuis also scored, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves for Pittsburgh, which has won eight of nine home games and leapfrogged the Devils in the crowded middle of the Eastern Conference playoff pack.
