And once they got rolling, the defending champions overpowered the frustrated Chicago Blackhawks and moved within one win of a return trip to the Stanley Cup finals. With injured stars Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk sidelined, Hossa and Henrik Zetterberg had two goals each, sending the Red Wings to a convincing 6-1 victory and a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference finals. ROYAL OAK, Mich. -- Several nights ago, Mitt Romney began to recount a tale about when Detroit was the pride of the nation, a place where everyone wanted to be. "I think my dad had a job, like, being the grand master or whatever of the 50th celebration of the automobile in Detroit," Romney said at a Tea Party rally in Milford. "They painted Woodward Avenue with gold paint. My memory's a little foggy here, so, uh, but – yeah I was probably four or something like that. But they had the cars go down Woodward Avenue.

DETROIT - Other cities and towns have teetered at the edge of financial disaster lately, but Detroit, the capital of America's auto industry and once the nation's fourth-largest city, has just become the most striking test case for a key question: Can a city that has fallen so far be saved? A giant plot of land - 139 square miles - with only half the residents it once had, Detroit has watched in recent years as tax revenues slipped too low to support its costs, its debts swelled to a stunning $12 billion, and, this spring, its money nearly ran out. Now, after months of...

This loss is going to stick with Detroit for a while. The Titans had a nine-point lead early on but couldn't overcome a key injury and foul trouble in the second half of a 66-53 loss to No. 10 Wisconsin-Green Bay in the Horizon League tournament championship game on Sunday. Detroit coach Autumn Rademacher was very emotional in the postgame press conference. She and her players felt like they were going to win and clinch the Horizon's automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.

Shareta Brown scored 24 points and Senee Shearer added 23 to help Detroit stun No. 9 Wisconsin-Green Bay 70-58 on Thursday night, handing the Phoenix their first loss of the season. The Titans (13-11, 9-3 Horizon League) snapped the Phoenix's (20-1, 10-1) 40-game regular season winning streak and ended their bid for a second straight perfect season in the Horizon. Top-ranked Baylor is the only unbeaten team left in Division I women's basketball. Green Bay trailed for most of the game after falling behind by 14 early.

A 14-year-old Detroit boy will stand trial as an adult in the shooting death of his 36-year-old mother. A 36th District Court judge determined Thursday that there was enough evidence to send Joshua Smith's case to Wayne County Circuit Court. Smith faces an adult charge of first-degree murder and using a firearm during a felony. Arraignment is set for March 15. Police say Tamiko Robinson was shot to death Feb. 27 at her home following an argument with the teenager. A shotgun belonging to the boy's stepfather was used in the shooting.

Kansas coach Bill Self hardly broached the topic of fellow No. 2 seed Missouri's upset loss to Norfolk State on Friday. He figured there was no need — his players already knew. He made sure to mention another No. 2 seed, Duke, also went down. "The Duke game was going on and there was 5 seconds left or 20 seconds left when I finished doing my pregame," Self said. "I told them then, 'Hey, Duke's getting ready to get beat, too. "' It served as a warning to the Jayhawks.

Max Scherzer headed off the mound and toward the dugout, where manager Jim Leyland was waiting to offer a congratulatory handshake. After 15 strikeouts in seven innings, Scherzer's day was done, and the only question was whether the Detroit right-hander's fine effort would go to waste. "We're in this business to win," Scherzer said. And win the Tigers did. Alex Avila's tiebreaking, two-run single highlighted a three-run seventh that sent Detroit to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

Justin Morneau hit a two-run home run in his second game back from a wrist injury and the Minnesota Twins held on for a 4-3 victory over the Tigers on Thursday in Detroit. P.J. Walters (1-1) allowed four hits - including three solo homers - in 6 1/3 innings for the Twins, who swept the two-game series. Minnesota has won two in a row for only the second time this season. Morneau's homer off Doug Fister (0-2) opened the scoring in the third, and Trevor Plouffe followed with a long ball.

John Jaso lined a single over Detroit's drawn-in infield in the eighth inning to drive in Michael Saunders with the tiebreaking run, Jason Vargas pitched eight strong innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the Tigers 2-1 on Wednesday night. Jaso's single off reliever Duane Below was hit so hard shortstop Jhonny Peralta barely had time to react before it was landing in the outfield grass and Saunders was jogging home with the go-ahead run. Saunders had led off the eighth inning with a pinch-hit double down the left-field line.

Justin Verlander won his 12th straight decision on the road, Prince Fielder homered and the Detroit Tigers raced to an early lead before holding on for a 6-4 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Verlander wasn't his sharpest, giving up three runs and seven hits. But Verlander retired nine of his final 10 batters, struck out six and went at least six innings for the 49th straight start. Andy Dirks had a single, double and drove in three runs in his first two at-bats, helping give Verlander (3-1)

The Detroit bullpen did its best to melt down for a second straight night. This time Seattle couldn't complete the ninth-inning rally. The Mariners rallied from an early 5-0 deficit against Detroit ace Justin Verlander, loaded the bases in the ninth against versus Detroit closer Jose Valverde but couldn't come up with the needed hit in a 6-4 loss to the Tigers on Tuesday night. A night after Seattle scored three in the ninth to pull out a 3-2 victory, the Mariners nearly pulled off another late stunner.

Adam Dunn hit another homer in the first inning — and that was it for Chicago's offense. Despite holding Detroit to 10 runs in the series, the White Sox ended up losing two of three to the defending AL Central champions. Prince Fielder homered and Rick Porcello pitched impressively into the seventh inning to lead the Tigers to a 3-1 victory Sunday. Fielder's 432-foot shot to right-center — his fourth of the year — broke a 1-all tie in the third. "We played neck and neck all weekend, but we couldn't get the one big hit we needed today to win this...

Ray McCallum and Eli Holman sat in their hotel room Friday afternoon, watching as No. 15 seed Norfolk State knocked off Missouri. When the two starters for Detroit got to the arena a few hours later, they learned fellow No. 15 seed Lehigh had also beat Duke. "We told each other, 'That could be us,"' McCallum said. Kansas had other ideas. Thomas Robinson bullied his way to 16 points and 13 rebounds, and the second-seeded Jayhawks cruised to a 65-50 victory over the Titans, restoring just a little bit of order to a wild day of upsets in the NCAA tournament.

They had not been charged by late afternoon, Detroit police Sgt. Eren Stephens said. Police also searched a Sterling Heights home.

Third baseman Brandon Inge has agreed to terms on a contract with the Oakland Athletics. Once they put him on the 40-man roster, the A's must pay Inge only a prorated portion of the $480,000 minimum — or about $412,000 — of the $5,308,743 he was owed when released by Detroit on Thursday. Inge hit .100 (2 for 20) with one homer and two RBIs in nine games this season. He turns 35 on May 19 and joins his first new team in his 12th major league season. "It's a good feeling, but at the same time it's different," Inge said.
