On the morning after his landslide win in Louisiana, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum asserted the results show he is a strong contender for the GOP nomination and it is the Romney campaign that is "desperate. " "Even though a lot of folks are saying this race is over, the people in Louisiana said, ‘No, no it's not,' " Santorum said Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation. " "They still want to see someone that they can trust, someone who's not running an Etch A Sketch campaign, but one that has their principles written on their heart, not on an erasable tablet.

A senior White House adviser says none of the Republicans who want President Barack Obama's job has offered any substantive proposals to lower unemployment. David Plouffe (pluhf) concedes in an NBC "Today"interview that Obama's poll standings have deteriorated amid high joblessness. But he also says congressional Republicans have failed to cooperate on a program to jump-start the economy. Plouffe argues "there wouldn't be a political issue" if the GOP would support Obama's $447 billion jobs program.

Senior White House advisor David Plouffe said Sunday that voters won't judge President Obama too harshly on energy, despite recent poll results that show two-thirds of Americans disapprove of his handling of gas prices. "I think the American people are very smart about this," Plouffe said on NBC's "Meet the Press. " "They know there's no immediate silver bullet. They know that, while we need to do as much as we can in terms of domestic oil and gas exploration and drilling — which we're doing at an eight-year high here — we are more energy independent than we've been in over a decade.

A White House adviser say Mitt Romney has "moved all over the place" on issues from abortion to gay marriage over his career and might not have firm enough convictions to make the tough decisions as president. David Plouffe (pluhf) jokes that if Romney thought "it was good to say the sky was green and the grass was blue to win an election, he'd say it. " Plouffe, who was Barack Obama's 2008 campaign manager, notes a new Iowa poll showing Herman Cain leading with 23 percent support, and Romney next at 22 percent.

A senior White House adviser says Democrats and Republicans must “get out of their comfort zone’’ to avert a government default. David Plouffe (pluff) acknowledges on NBC’s “Today’’ show that President Barack Obama essentially is responsible for the economy. But he says the deep recession wasn’t just “a run of bad luck,’’ but rather the result of bad government policies by the preceding Republican administration. He says no deficit reduction deal is likely as long as tax increases are ruled out. Asked if the Aug. 2 deadline is real, Plouffe says,...

A top adviser to President Barack Obama says the White House is "happy to have a debate" about Obama's performance in office, while a leading House Republican says the president can't win on his record. A top adviser to President Barack Obama said Monday the new deal to avoid a government default lifts a big cloud over the economy, even if the country had to first endure a "three-ring circus" in Washington. Appearing on morning news shows, senior aide David Plouffe acknowledged that there were key elements of a compromise that eluded the White House and Obama. He said, for example, that the administration will continue to push for new tax revenues. "The only way to really reduce the deficits significantly in a smart way is to make sure there is smart entitlement reform and...

During a recent Democratic caucus in Newton, Elizabeth Warren worked one side of the room while Joseph P. Kennedy III worked the other. In between them stood Kyle Sullivan, their shared communications adviser. Sullivan and his business partner, Doug Rubin, are splitting their time between two of the hottest political races not just in Massachusetts but the country. Governor Deval Patrick, continuing to ramp up his involvement in national politics, will be named today one of 30 national co-chairs of President Obama's reelection campaign, according to aides to both men. The title, which Patrick also held in Obama's campaign in 2008, means the governor will advise the president on political strategy, host events on his behalf, and help organize Obama's supporters in Massachusetts. Patrick and Obama share roots in Chicago and political advisers in David Plouffe and David Axelrod, and consider one another to be friends.

WASHINGTON — President Obama, who hitched his ride to the White House three years ago largely on the infectious energy and organizing efforts of young Americans, faces challenges as he attempts to court their support in his reelection bid, political analysts say. Voters under 30 have, as a group, become increasingly disillusioned dealing with the demoralizing economy. Their 13 percent unemployment rate is significantly higher than the national average, as many students graduate into a world of massive college loan debts and barren job markets.
