BALTIMORE - From a business point of view, the Red Sox have handled it right. They have been going year-to-year with David Ortiz, which, given the DH market and the fact that he is now 36, is the right thing to do. But there's more to it with Ortiz. He can't be treated like any other DH or like any other 36-year-old. He is different. We all know it and the Red Sox know it. He is this team's goodwill ambassador, its most emotional player. He wears his heart on his sleeve.

By Tony Massarotti, Boston.com Columnist If the Red Sox are feeling good about themselves in the wake of a stretch during which they have gone 10-3, that is certainly a good thing. If the Red Sox are more unified now than they were at the beginning of the season, that is a good thing, too. And if the Red Sox are using the media and criticism as a rallying cause, that is also excellent news. But for a team that has not had a winning record at any point this season, the Red Sox on Wednesday seemed a touch beyond their skis.

The Red Sox are back at .500, getting stellar outings from their starting pitchers (Daniel Bard, aside; yeesh), the bullpen has been nails, and the offense continues to rake, as evidenced by Scott (Burly) Podsednik going deep for the first time since May 6 - 2010 - in Wednesday's compelling 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Things are clearly better, and whether or not it was indeed that team meeting that steered things back on course, these Red Sox all of a sudden seem more in tune with each other and the job at hand, making them a lot more fun to watch than they have been in a long...

Celebrating the release of the new disc "Fenway Park: Greatest Hits" at the Hard Rock Cafe Thursday were Sox players Daniel Bard , Jarrod Saltalamacchia , and Darnell McDonald , all of whom perform on the 12-track CD. Led by singer-guitarist Joe Silva and backed by Grammy nominee Jon Butcher , the players joined in a chorus of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" while team president Larry Lucchino and wife Stacey clapped along....

BALTIMORE - Let's give David Ortiz a mulligan. He had a bad day. After hitting a towering home run to help his team win for the ninth time in 11 games Monday night against the Orioles, Ortiz had an awkward, strange response on the topic of leadership and respect. And we have no idea how the topic came up. Ortiz's comments appeared in an ESPN.com column, so only Ortiz and the reporter, Gordon Edes, really know how it all went down. All I know is this: I'd be hard-pressed to find a player more respected in baseball overall and on his own team than Ortiz.
