Roy Hargrove Quintet Earfood (Decca) ESSENTIAL "I'm Not So Sure" Every time trumpeter Roy Hargrove puts out an album, I think: This will be the one that convinces me that he has something to add to the jazz canon. And every time I am disappointed. This is not a commentary on his actual playing. His technique on the horn is right up there with his contemporaries Wynton Marsalis and Nicholas Payton (and it surpasses that of Dave Douglas). But unlike those guys, Hargrove always sounds like he's catching up to the aesthetic of the day (or the latest fad)

Experimental Moodswing Orchestra Moodswing Orchestra El Destructo ESSENTIAL “Sweet Adelaide’’ Moodswing Orchestra (with an altered lineup) plays at the Lizard Lounge on Thursday. Sounds arrive in this order, layering on top of one another: the gentle tinkling of piano keys. Radio static. Bowed strings. A slow, insistent drum beat. A whispered chant. A lovely female voice enters - it belongs to Joan Wasser - and weaves around the rhythm.

The SFJAZZ Collective is an octet comprising a jazz festival's worth of names, each an acclaimed bandleader in his or her own right. One fears that such an all-star aggregation will prove less than the sum of its parts, but at the Berklee Performance center on Friday night, the Collective was a marvel. Each year since its founding in 2004, the Collective has featured works by a post-bop master, supplemented by member's compositions. This year's master is Wayne Shorter, and the concert began with his elegant "Footprints," inventively arranged by pianist Renee Rosnes.

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The 50th anniversary Newport Jazz Festival wrapped up without rain, good news to the 6,500 who braved the predicted aftereffects of Hurricane Charley and caught a day's worth of music they're not likely to forget. Plenty of them were still there, bundled up against the cold and the occasional stray droplet, when Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, and Brian Blade wrapped up their festival-ending set last night. Shorter squeezed off a few final notes on his soprano sax, the four men took their well-earned bow, and another George...

Floored by Four is the avant-garde punk-jazz quartet of bass guitarist Mike Watt (who’s the leader here), guitarist Nels Cline, electronic musician Yuka Honda, and drummer Dougie Bowne. You know all these folks. Watt was in the Minutemen and fIREHOSE. Cline, a leading free-jazz guitarist, is now a member of Wilco. Honda, half of the duo Cibo Matto, has credits that range from Dave Douglas to the Beastie Boys. Bowne has worked with Iggy Pop and the Lounge Lizards. In other words, these four, together, can do just about anything.

And the much missed Jones brothers, Elvin, Thad, and Hank, were so deep into their own creative pursuits they never even tried to launch a family combo. In jazz, sharing parentage offers no guarantee that musical siblings will go on to work...
