By Michael Vega, Globe Staff WILMINGTON --- Greetings from Ristuccia Arena where the Bruins returned to the ice for the first time since Saturday's convincing 6-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. Also back on the ice for the first time since he breaking his nose after taking a Steve Staios puck off his face a week ago was Daniel Paille, who participated in his first full practice, donning a full cage. Andrew Ference, who was a scratch Saturday, was not on the ice. The Bruins, who climbed above .500 for the first time season, will attempt to extend their winning streak to six games when they...

WASHINGTON - Four games. Each decided by one goal. The Bruins yet to score while on a power play. If the Bruins are marching toward a second Stanley Cup in two seasons, it's clear now that they'll be doing it on tiptoe rather than in full, bold, Clydesdale-like stride. Limited to a lone goal for a third time in the series, the defending Cup champs on Thursday night suffered a 2-1 loss to the Capitals at the Verizon Center, and the best-of-seven first-round series is now tied at two wins apiece.

Daniel Paille will undergo surgery tomorrow at Massachusetts General Hospital to repair a broken nose. Paille suffered the injury in the third period of last night's 6-2 win over the Islanders. Paille was hit in the nose by a Steve Staios slap shot. According to GM Peter Chiarelli, Paille will be day-to-day following the procedure. It's unlikely Paille will be available for Thursday's game against Edmonton. @GlobeFluto

The skates and pads hanging in Daniel Paille's stall after yesterday's 3-2 loss to the Islanders indicated the bad news: The left wing would not be traveling to New York. Paille was injured in the third period when he was tripped by Steve Staios. He got to his feet slowly and skated off the ice at 9:01, his left arm tucked against his body, and didn't return. The Bruins were already without Nathan Horton (concussion) and Rich Peverley (knee sprain). Now they will be without their fourth-line left wing and regular penalty-killer.

WASHINGTON - After Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Capitals at the Verizon Center, David Krejci slumped at his stall. Krejci, the Bruins' most offensive-minded center, looked like someone who failed to put a single puck on goal. "It [stinks]," Krejci said. "You try to stay positive. But it's so hard, you know? We've got to be better at this area. We don't have many days to practice. Every time we go out on the ice, we've got to make sure we shoot to score. It starts in practice. We've got to work on it. " The Bruins peppered Braden Holtby with 45 pucks.

WASHINGTON — The Bruins are not practicing Tuesday. They are enjoying a rest day after claiming a 2-1 series lead with Monday night's 4-3 win. Claude Julien has yet to complete reviewing the tape from Game 3, but from what he's seen, he liked the competitive spirit the Bruins showed at an increasing rate throughout the night. "I thought as the game went on, we got better and more comfortable," Julien said. "From the first period to the second period to the third period, we got better as a team.

BOSTON -- Bruins center Chris Kelly ended a scoreless game less than two minutes into overtime, beating Capitals rookie goaltender Braden Holtby with a slapshot to give the Bruins a 1-0 win in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. Increasingly quiet due to the game's lack of scoring and their team's squandered chances, Bruins fans were allowed to exhale after Kelly's goal. TD Garden erupted as the Bruins celebrated on the ice and the Capitals skated off of it, a fitting way to punctuate the first game of Boston's Stanley Cup title defense.

We still don't know a lot about Braden Holtby, but Bruins fans now know enough to worry. For more than 60 minutes Thursday night, Washington's rookie netminder, previously known as merely the last resort on the Capitals' depth chart, came within a glove save of handing the Bruins a Game 1 upset in this Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. "I don't really know what happened," lamented the fresh-faced 22-year-old, moments after Chris Kelly's pinpoint slapper off left wing rocketed by his glove hand (left)

WILMINGTON - Rich Peverley scored an empty-net goal in the Bruins' 5-2 win over the Lightning Tuesday night. He played a team-high 6:10 on the power play and took shifts on the top two lines. He also saw 1:24 of shorthanded action alongside usual partner Chris Kelly. It was exactly the type of multipurpose game both player and organization expect. "I've always tried to make myself available in every situation," Peverley said. "I want to be able to be counted on in big situations.
