The Bruins continued their extreme makeover/purge yesterday, swapping veteran defenseman Nick Boynton to Phoenix for Paul Mara, the former Belmont Hill standout who nine years ago was chosen No. 7 overall in the draft by Tampa Bay, one pick ahead of the Bruins' selection of Sergei Samsonov. Mara, some eight months younger than Boynton, will turn 27 at the start of training camp in September. On course to become an unrestricted free agent next summer -- a consideration in the Coyotes dealing him -- Mara signed a two-year deal with the Bruins that various sources suggested will bring him upwards of $3...

HAVERHILL - Coyotes lurking in the woods in Massachusetts have been known to attack dogs, chickens, cats, and even, in rare instances, people. But a buffalo? Tyler Kimball said it actually happened here on his farm in the dark of night on Saturday, when he says a pack of coyotes entered a 9-acre pen where his 14 buffalo grazed. When the coyotes were done, he says, a buffalo was missing. Kimball said he is certain coyotes are responsible for killing the 16-month-old bison, a female named Scruffy who weighed about 400 pounds.

The Phoenix Coyotes avoided a sweep with a gutty performance in Los Angeles. They couldn't do it again back home in the desert, though the disappointment shouldn't linger too long. This was, after all, the best season in the franchise's 33-year NHL history. Unable to capitalize on numerous chances early and late, the Coyotes were knocked out of the playoffs when Dustin Penner scored 17:42 into overtime to give the Los Angeles Kings a 4-3 victory in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday night.

Mike Comrie snapped the Coyotes' 15-game winless streak when he put back his own rebound with 24.2 seconds to play in overtime, giving Phoenix a 3-2 win over the host Minnesota Wild last night. On a breakaway, Comrie skated in toward Manny Fernandez, and his first shot bounced off the goalie's leg. But Comrie corralled the rebound in the lower left circle and slipped it under the fallen Fernandez. The Coyotes had been 0-8-4-3 in their slide. Their last win was Feb. 20 against Columbus.

The Phoenix Coyotes were at their best when they were up or down a skater, or two, and that gave them a chance to survive for at least one more game. Phoenix scored its first three goals on special teams and Ilya Bryzgalov made 31 saves in a 5-2 win over host Detroit yesterday that forced Game 7 in the first-round series. “They won the special teams battle,’’ Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “That sucked the life out of our team.’’ Phoenix will host the deciding game tomorrow night.
