When it comes to cable TV, Boston is practically Comcast Corp.'s town. GREENBERG . (Max on Comcast) Another darkly comic portrait of a narcissist from writer-director Noah Baumbach (“The Squid and the Whale,’’ “Margot at the Wedding’’), this lets Ben Stiller shade his satiric-dolt persona into dramatic territory as a self-absorbed lost boy in his 40s. Not everyone’s cup of hemlock, but it’s Baumbach’s leanest, most confident movie yet — possibly his best. With Greta Gerwig. (R; runs through July 14) TY BURR HEAD OF STATE . (Max on Comcast)

PHILADELPHIA - In a bad year for cable stocks, Comcast's fall has been downright ugly. Shares of the nation's largest cable operator tumbled to a 20-month low yesterday after it disclosed this year's cable revenue growth and cash flow will come in lower than expected. It said consumers were balking at increasing their spending in a slowing economy and phone companies had stepped up competition. Meanwhile, Comcast also raised its capital spending to push advanced digital set-top boxes and its digital services.

WASHINGTON - The Tennis Channel is accusing Comcast Corp. of discriminating against its cable TV network by relegating it to a premium sports tier that reaches only a small number of subscribers, even as Comcast-owned sports channels get much wider distribution. In a complaint filed with the Federal Communications Commission, the Tennis Channel charges Comcast with violating rules that prohibit such operators from favoring channels they own over those from other firms. The Tennis Channel reaches about 2.6 million homes through Comcast.

Comcast Corp. officials stepped up their campaign yesterday opposing the City of Boston’s petition to the Federal Communications Commission for control over the price of basic cable service. Mayor Thomas M. Menino wants the federal agency to reverse a 2002 decision that stripped the city’s authority to regulate cable television rates, saying Comcast does not face effective competition and has raised its rates several times since deregulation began. The city’s May 9 petition states that “the failed promise of effective competition has left the majority of subscribers in the city...

NEW YORK - Comcast Corp. on Friday said its new method of managing Internet traffic may sometimes result in slower Web surfing for subscribers who use their cable modem the most, yet the company has not received a single customer complaint in trial runs in five areas. The new system is set to replace the current one, which drew a sanction from the Federal Communications Commission. Comcast said the new system kicks in only when Net traffic approaches congestion. It then identifies a customer's bandwidth and slows down their Internet traffic...

Comcast Corp. said it has begun the national roll-out of a new feature that will enable its Xfinity TV customers to make high-definition Skype video calls from their HDTVs while watching a favorite show. One possible scenario: Celtics fans confer with one another during a play-off basketball game. The fan continues to watch the game, but can also simultaneously video-chat with a pal. The chat is viewed in a box that takes up a small portion of the TV screen. With Skype on Xfinity, customers are able to make and receive video calls from their TV in HD picture quality,...

Comcast Corp., the country's largest Internet service provider, is going to start charging extra when customers go over a certain monthly data limit. That limit, however, is very high, starting at 300 gigabytes for basic Internet plans. Only 1 percent of U.S. Internet users use that much data in a month, according a measurement firm. Comcast Corp. said Thursday that it will test charging $10 for every 50 gigabytes over that limit. Comcast has previously limited use to 250 gigabytes per month, but hasn't charged those who exceed that limit.

Residents on Wednesday may weigh in on what they think of their Comcast cable TV service. The city will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. in the aldermen's chamber at City Hall. Mayor Robert J. Dolan is in negotiations with Comcast to extend a 10-year licensing agreement, which expires July 1. State law requires a public hearing to solicit input from consumers to evalute the current level of service and future needs. The town's cable access station recently advised residents of a change that Comcast made to its local channel lineup. Burlington Cable Access Television's government access channel on Comcast has switched from Channel 10 to 99, according to Jennifer Dodge, executive director of the station. The change is being made because WWDP, the Boston-area broadcast station that carries the ShopNBC network, is exercising its rights under Federal Communications Commission rules to be carried on the same channel it uses for noncable broadcasts.John Laidler
