Jason Vargas threw seven strong innings, Kyle Seager homered and drove in three runs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the free-falling Colorado Rockies 10-3 on Saturday. One day after being victimized by Kevin Millwood's two-hitter — his first shutout in nine years — the Rockies looked lost against Vargas, who took a two-hitter into the seventh to help hand Colorado its 12th loss in 15 games. Vargas (5-3) kept the Rockies off-balance with an array of offspeed pitches set up by pinpoint control of his fastball.

Kevin Millwood tossed a two-hitter for his first shutout in nearly nine years and Mike Carp hit a solo homer, helping the Seattle Mariners snap a four-game skid with a 4-0 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. It was also the 22nd complete game of the 37-year-old righty's career. Millwood (2-4) comfortably cruised through this game and didn't surrender his first hit until two outs in the sixth. He struck out seven and walked one. He didn't allow a runner to reach third until the ninth inning, but got Carlos Gonzalez to line out to end the game.

Emergency workers were unable to revive him. “There are no signs of foul play,’’ Wall said. “. . . At this point it would look like it was some sort of a natural cause.’’ The Rockies said Mr. McGregor was on a...

The Arizona Diamondbacks struggled to touch Jamie Moyer on the mound or when he was hustling down the baseline. The 49-year-old Moyer mowed through the Diamondbacks lineup, keeping them off balance and waving at his 78 mph fastball. He lasted 6 1-3 innings and surrendered just six hits to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 6-1 win over the reeling Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. But Moyer (2-3) may have done more to help the Rockies with his legs than his crafty left arm. With two on and two outs in the fourth inning, Moyer turned on a fastball, dribbling the ball...

Juan Nicasio took another big step in his remarkable comeback from a broken neck when he threw three impressive innings Friday in the Colorado Rockies' 6-4 loss to the Oakland Athletics. This was his first start since Aug. 5, when Washington's Ian Desmond scorched a line drive that struck the stocky right-hander in his right temple, fracturing his skull. The fall broke his neck. Eight months later, Nicasio is trying to earn a spot in the Rockies' rotation, and the club was eager to see if he'd be gun shy, recoiling or cutting off his follow through to protect...

The Astros took a 5-1 lead off rookie Drew Pomeranz (1-1), who was making his third major league start. Ted Lilly threw six solid innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers got home runs from Dee Gordon, Andre Ethier and A.J. Ellis in a 7-6 win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Lilly gave up four hits and two runs while the Dodgers pounded out 11 hits off Rockies right-hander Jhoulys Chacin and then held on despite a shaky bullpen performance to cap a big day for the franchise that saw the tumultuous Frank McCourt era come to an end. Jhoulys Chacin kept reminding himself just to put the ball over the plate and don't nibble too much. Still, the Colorado Rockies' ace-in-the-making couldn't bring himself to follow that plan, especially after Pablo Sandoval's towering two-run homer in the first inning. Chacin was roughed up in the home opener Monday, allowing four runs over four innings in a 7-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants. It's an outing he wants to quickly forget. Well, besides one important lesson: Don't nibble.

The Cleveland Indians have gone from a recent history of selling star pitchers to buyers, acquiring Ubaldo Jimenez from the Colorado Rockies to help them make a push for the playoffs. The trade is contingent on the 2010 All-Star passing a physical. Cleveland is sending to the Rockies right-handers Alex White and Joe Gardner and first baseman-outfielder Matt McBride, all minor leaguers, along with a player to be named. Left-hander Drew Pomeranz, considered one of Cleveland's top two pitching prospects, was pulled from his start at Double-A Akron.

The only thing Ervin Santana was concerned about Monday was the health of his shoulder. No problem there. "Even if I got beat up today, the best thing was that I felt good coming out," the Angels pitcher said. Santana threw four scoreless innings and Howie Kendrick launched his third homer of the spring, but Los Angeles lost to the Colorado Rockies 4-3 on a frosty afternoon. Santana, removed from his previous start Wednesday against the White Sox after taking a line drive off the right shoulder, showed no ill effects in his 61-pitch outing.
