Clayton Richard had trouble locating his fastball, and the Cubs made him pay. Chris Volstad made Chicago's rotation, then struggled against San Diego. It was one rough day to be a starting pitcher. Jason Bartlett and Jesus Guzman homered to help the Padres beat the Cubs 12-11 on Thursday. Richard was tagged for nine runs, eight earned, and 12 hits in 4 1-3 innings, leaving him with a 9.00 spring ERA. But the left-hander and manager Bud Black didn't seem too concerned with the results.

Clayton Richard struggled at Coors Field. He's pretty sure he would have been bad in any ballpark though. Clayton Richard and two relievers combined on a four-hitter, Chase Headley hit a grand slam and Andy Parrino had his first big league homer for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-4 on Sunday to avoid a four-game sweep. Headley's second career slam, off Scott Elbert in the eighth, ended his 0-for-12 slump to start the season. Headley also walked three times. Still, the Padres had their second three-error game of the series and have committed eight in four games.

The Houston Astros’ wild 4-2 win over Philadelphia lasted 16 innings, more than 5 hours, and saw Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt play left field and ground into the final out last night at Philadelphia. Oswalt became the first Phillies pitcher to play a position in the field in 39 years after Ryan Howard was ejected in the 14th inning. Oswalt caught a routine fly ball from Astros catcher Jason Castro. The last pitcher to play a position was Bill Wilson Aug. 6, 1971. Oswalt was forced to go into the outfield with Philadelphia out of position players.
