Jesus Guzman was the hero for about five minutes. Guzman's two-run double off St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte with two outs in the eighth inning gave the San Diego Padres a one-run lead Monday night. But Guzman was trumped in the bottom half by Tyler Greene, who hit a two-run homer that held up for a 4-3 victory. The Cardinals ended a four-game losing streak and denied the Padres their first three-game winning streak of the year. "When I hit that double, I think we're going to win," Guzman said.

Clayton Richard had trouble locating his fastball, and the Cubs made him pay. Chris Volstad made Chicago's rotation, then struggled against San Diego. It was one rough day to be a starting pitcher. Jason Bartlett and Jesus Guzman homered to help the Padres beat the Cubs 12-11 on Thursday. Richard was tagged for nine runs, eight earned, and 12 hits in 4 1-3 innings, leaving him with a 9.00 spring ERA. But the left-hander and manager Bud Black didn't seem too concerned with the results.

Clayton Richard struggled at Coors Field. He's pretty sure he would have been bad in any ballpark though. In 5 1-3 innings, the Padres starter yielded eight runs on 10 hits, including six doubles and two homers, and the Colorado Rockies beat San Diego 8-4 Wednesday night. "If I was pitching in San Diego," Richard said, "it would have been a bad night the way I was throwing. " Richard (1-1) gave up five runs in the second on five hits, all for extra-bases. The onslaught included a two-run double by Wilin Rosario, a two-run homer by Jonathan Herrera, a...

San Diego lost another series in frustrating fashion. The Padres were outscored by all of two runs in their three-game set at San Francisco. They're getting quality outings from the starting pitchers that wind up being wasted. "Everything we're doing is close, but not quite there," Clayton Richard said. Pablo Sandoval homered off Richard to back Madison Bumgarner's fourth straight victory, and the Giants beat the Padres 4-1 on Sunday to deny San Diego its first series win of the season.
