The loss eliminated the Sox from postseason contention and touched off a series of changes in the organization. The effects of that transition lingered into this season as the Red Sox were depleted by injuries while adjusting to new manager Bobby Valentine. The Baltimore Orioles knocked starter Clay Buchholz out of the game in the sixth inning, put up six runs and hit their major league-leading 65th home run of the season. That would be enough to win most games — except this one against the hard-hitting Boston Red Sox. David Ortiz launched Boston's comeback from a three-run deficit with a mighty home run, and the Red Sox banged out 14 hits in an 8-6 victory Monday night. The Orioles staked starter Tommy Hunter to a 5-2 lead, but after Ortiz homered to begin a three-run sixth, Boston rode the momentum to the finish.

Celebrating the release of the new disc "Fenway Park: Greatest Hits" at the Hard Rock Cafe Thursday were Sox players Daniel Bard , Jarrod Saltalamacchia , and Darnell McDonald , all of whom perform on the 12-track CD. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Red Sox now lead the major leagues with six balks. That may not seem like much, but when these lapses in concentration cost you a game, you have to start wondering what the heck is going on. Clay Buchholz balked in Tampa Bay's first run in a 2-1 loss to the Rays Wednesday night at Tropicana Field. And Franklin Morales committed a pair of balks in back-to-back innings, but he was able to get out of both situations unscathed. Buchholz, Morales, and Daniel Bard have two balks apiece.

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff BALTIMORE — So guess who was walking around the Red Sox clubhouse last night after the game? Clay Buchholz. Turns out he is not going to Florida today to pitch in an Instructional League game. He will stay with the team and quite possibly could be activated for the game. At least that's what he told WEEI.com. Many fans are harboring hopes that Buchholz could ride to the rescue as a starter if there's a play-in game tomorrow. But that seems far-fetched.

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff FORT MYERS, Fla. — The big game comes tonight when the Red Sox and Yankees tangle in their first spring training tilt in Tampa. But back here at the Jet Blue park ranch, we'll see Clay Buchholz throw against minor league hitters and other assorted major leaguers to get his work in. This is also the day when Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez takes some fly balls in the outfield. And it could be that he gets into a game in the outfield at some point in spring training.

Clay Buchholz once again Sunday fell far short of his billing, allowing five runs in 3 2/3 innings, and three home runs, in the Red Sox' 9-6 17-inning loss to the Orioles at Fenway Park. "Clay's performance is not what he wanted or I wanted it to be for sure," said manager Bobby Valentine . "He left a lot of pitches in a real hittable zone and gave up a lot of hard-hit balls. " When asked if Buchholz was in danger of being removed from the starting rotation, Valentine said, "I have no plans to change him at this time.

Down by three runs in the sixth inning, the Boston Red Sox desperately needed a spark to get back into the game against the Baltimore Orioles. With one mighty swing, David Ortiz launched a ball out of Camden Yards and sent the Red Sox on their way to an uplifting 8-6 victory Monday night. Dustin Pedroia had two RBIs and Mike Aviles scored the go-ahead run in the seventh to help Boston secure its ninth win in 11 games. The Red Sox are tied with the New York Yankees in the AL East cellar but are at .500 (21-21)

BALTIMORE — The Red Sox were a few days away from starting the season when they learned their closer, Andrew Bailey, had torn a ligament in his thumb. They replaced him with Alfredo Aceves, who had been a starter throughout spring training. He blew two saves in his first four chances. The pitcher they acquired to be the primary set-up man, Marc Melancon, was hit so hard in four appearances to start the season that there was little choice but to send him to the minors. He faced 18 batters and 13 reached base.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Jeremy Hellickson pitched six solid innings, Luke Scott had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat Boston 2-1 on Wednesday night, snapping the Red Sox's five-game winning streak. Hellickson (4-0) allowed one run and five hits en route to winning a career-best sixth consecutive decision, dating to Sept. 4. The right-hander struck out six and walked two. Tampa Bay second baseman Will Rhymes left in the eighth inning after being hit by a pitch near his right elbow.

Clay Buchholz Monday night became the first Red Sox pitcher to give up five or more earned runs in five consecutive starts in 72 years. He also improved his record to 3-1. Amazing. The guy with the winningest record on the Red Sox has an ERA of 8.69. The Oakland A's are the Oakland F's when it comes to hitting. The not-so-great grandsons of Charles O. Finley came to Fenway with a robust team batting average of .205 in 23 games, easily the lowest in the majors. You're usually in trouble when your whole team is hitting 5 points north of the Mendoza Line.

WASHINGTON - Despite giving up four runs on four hits, including a pair of home runs, in Tuesday's 8-7 victory over the Nationals, Clay Buchholz came away encouraged after the exhibition finale for both teams before a crowd of 30,568 at Nationals Park. "That's the best I've felt all spring," said Buchholz, who recorded five strikeouts and no walks in 5 2/3 innings, throwing 67 pitches (45 strikes). "I watched videos of the two home runs that I gave up and both of them were pretty good pitches, but they got some good wood on them and they went out. "Other than that,...
