Day Trip (Nonesuch) Guitarist Pat Metheny has made delicate, contemplative music, and he has made intense excursions into skronk. At his least interesting, he has led his long-running Pat Metheny Group into that awkward place where New Age meets arena rock. But his new album, "Day Trip," represents Metheny at his best, creating music of understated sophistication by interacting sublimely with equally talented musicians. Here, Berklee's favorite son returns to the trio format, with which he has had great success; his cohorts now are bassist Christian McBride and drummer Antonio Sanchez.

Jonatha Brooke The Works (Bad Dog) ESSENTIAL "My Sweet and Bitter Bowl" Following her '90s work in The Story with Jennifer Kimball, Jonatha Brooke's seventh solo release marks her as the first woman to set Woody Guthrie's lyrics to music. It's not entirely a solo effort, though. A notable core band -- keyboard player Joe Sample, bassist Christian McBride, drummer Steve Gadd -- performs and guests include Greg Leisz adding lilting pedal-steel guitar to the doleful "My Battle," and Keb' Mo', who plays dobro and duets on the lusty, bluesy "All You Gotta Do Is Touch Me. " Still, it's...

JULY 7-9 BILBAO, Spain Bilbao BBK Live Festival: It was just two weeks ago that Amy Winehouse stumbled and slurred her way through a concert in Belgrade. The soulful yet troubled singer has had difficulties over the past few years, but is that any reason for the audience to boo her off the stage? Based on video clips, I would answer a resounding yes. So it comes as no surprise that Winehouse has canceled her performance here. Although she was probably the most anticipated performer on the bill, there are several bands in the lineup that are worthy of the trans-Atlantic festivities.

Musicians often talk about their eclectic tastes, but few have walked the walk like singer-songwriter-pianist Bruce Hornsby. Following his breakout in the ’80s with bright pop hits like “The Way It Is’’ and “Mandolin Rain,’’ Hornsby’s winding path has included serving time as an adjunct member of the Grateful Dead and as a promiscuous collaborator in the rock, jazz, and country worlds. In 2007 the Grammy winner released both a full-length collaboration with bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs and a jazz trio album featuring Christian McBride and Jack DeJohnette.

The sixth annual BeanTown Jazz Festival was a rollicking success on Saturday afternoon, and something approaching a fiasco on Friday night. The opening-night concert at Berklee Performance Center featuring McCoy Tyner and an advertised septet celebration of the Impulse record label started off well enough. Bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding , whose silhouette adorns the building, wowed the crowd with a short set featuring a band made up of her trumpeter boyfriend, Christian Scott , their fellow Berklee alumni Mike Tucker and Lyndon Rochelle , and...

Bassist Christian McBride has spun out a diverse jazz career over the past 17 years. The albums issued under his own name explore hard bop, funk, fusion, and big band sounds. While his latest might appear to be a gimmick - duets with better-known artists - it is actually among his most inspired recordings. Stripped down to bare bones, the music focuses intently on McBride. With no drum set, he provides not only the anchor of each song but the rhythm - and occasionally the melody. This crystallizes on the opener, "Afrika," where Angelique Kidjo's vocals soar over McBride's propulsive, Afropop bass line.

NEWPORT, R.I. — The eclectic mix of styles that is the hallmark of the Newport Jazz Festival could not have been displayed better than it was midafternoon yesterday. As trumpeter Wynton Marsalis took his quintet through an hour of buttoned-down, straight-ahead jazz on the main stage, saxophonist Ken Vandermark’s thrash-jazz outfit Powerhouse Sound unfurled its fury on one of the two side stages. Talk about stark differences: Legendary class act Dave Brubeck even sat in with Marsalis for a few tunes, his swiftly ascending chords defying his 89-year-old hands on a romp through “Take the...
