KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- NFL rushing leader Larry Johnson made the Denver Broncos' fifth-ranked run defense look ordinary. Johnson ran for 157 yards, Lawrence Tynes kicked four field goals, and Kansas City inaugurated the league's new Thanksgiving tripleheader with a 19-10 victory over Denver last night. The Chiefs (7-4) charged into a second-place tie with Denver in the AFC West and gave the Broncos (7-4) their first two-game losing streak since late in 2004. Johnson, raising his league-leading rushing total to 1,202 yards, consistently burned the Broncos, using his usual assortment of power moves...

The president of the Vatican bank has effectively been ousted after receiving a unanimous vote of no-confidence from bank overseers for having leaked documents and failed to do his job at a critical time in the Holy See's efforts to show financial transparency, the Vatican and officials said. Ettore Gotti Tedeschi has been a polarizing figure ever since he was named president of the bank, known as the Institute for Religious Works, or IOR, in 2009. He is under investigation for alleged money laundering by Italian magistrates, but the investigation isn't believed to have factored into the...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The statistics are too overwhelming to ignore: NFL teams that allow a 100-yard-plus rusher have a lousy winning percentage. In Week 11, teams that allowed a 100-yard rusher went 3-7. It is no small coincidence that once the Patriots were able to stop Kansas City's Derrick Blaylock, the replacement for the injured Priest Holmes Monday night, they found themselves in control of the game. New England went on to post a 27-19 win, improving to 9-1. Why? The Chiefs became one-dimensional, while the Patriots had running back Corey Dillon producing well, although he fell 2 yards short of...

FOXBOROUGH - For the first half of last night's 34-3 win against the Chiefs, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady found himself up close with the schemes Chiefs defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel had designed to stop him. The Patriots managed just two first downs on their first three possessions and were trailing, 3-0, after the first quarter. By the end of his team's third series, Brady was on the ground, sacked by Kansas City's Wallace Gillberry. There was, of course, something personal about the Chiefs' desire - and ability - to get to Brady, stemming from Crennel's four seasons under Bill Belichick as...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- On a day dominated by offense, it took a defensive back to settle things. Indianapolis star Peyton Manning had already thrown five touchdown passes when he lofted the ball into Kansas City's end zone with just under two minutes left yesterday. This time, the catch in the end zone belonged to Chiefs safety Greg Wesley, who returned the ball 65 yards to seal Kansas City's 45-35 victory. "We didn't want it to have to happen that way," Wesley said. "But they've got a powerful offense.

DENVER -- Rod Smith, Mike Anderson, and the Denver Broncos made that newfangled Kansas City defense seem a lot like the old one. And that vaunted Chiefs offense looked pretty lame, too. Anderson ran for a 44-yard touchdown and Smith became the first undrafted player in NFL history to reach 10,000 yards receiving last night, as the Broncos handled Kansas City from start to finish in a 30-10 victory. Jake Plummer went 13 of 18 for 152 yards -- including a 12-yard TD to Smith -- and ran for a score on fourth-and-goal from the 1, an efficient performance that was more than...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Could the circumstances of a pair of teams that each began the day at 6-4 have been any different? The Chiefs hammer the Patriots, 26-16 (it felt, and was, much worse than that), and the divisional water is still up to their nostrils. The Patriots are shoved around by the Chiefs and they're no worse off than they were when the day dawned. Compared to the Chiefs, they're sitting in the penthouse gazing down at the peasants, in complete control of their playoff destiny.

A couple of playmaking defenders were named franchise players by their NFL teams yesterday. The Kansas City Chiefs made defensive end Jared Allen , who led the league in sacks last season despite being suspended for the first two games, their franchise player. The Baltimore Ravens placed the designation on two-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker Terrell Suggs , a move that prevents him from becoming an unrestricted free agent at the end of the month. The Chiefs have been unable to work out a contract for almost a year with Allen, who had 15 1/2 sacks last season.

Just call them the Kansas City Patriots. With Romeo Crennel yesterday agreeing to become their defensive coordinator, when the Chiefs take the field next year, they will have the same defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator, and top front office executive who helped lead New England to three Super Bowl titles between 2002-05. Throw in quarterback Matt Cassel , who backed up Tom Brady with the Patriots, and the New England-Kansas City connection becomes even stronger as general manager Scott Pioli attempts to reverse the fortunes of the long-suffering Chiefs.

Despite admitting to federal investigators that he falsified drinking water test results, the superintendent of the Avon Water Department remains on the job, and his bosses seem wary of making any changes until they learn more about the charges against him. Getting that information has been difficult, said Town Administrator Michael McCue. "We are not in receipt of any official documents, other than a press release which we received secondhand" from a newspaper reporter, he said via e-mail.
