Kobe Bryant reverted to an old habit when he missed a potential game-winning shot. Given a second opportunity, he stuck with the change he’s made since breaking his right index finger. Bryant hit a 15-footer as time expired and scored the game’s final 7 points over the last 1:18 of overtime to lift the Los Angeles Lakers to a 107-106 victory over the Bucks in Milwaukee last night. Bryant, who had 27 of his 39 points in the second half and overtime, missed a shot from nearly the same spot from the left elbow that would’ve won it at the buzzer to end regulation.

For the first time in a recent collection of close games, Paul Pierce failed to come through with the winning field goal or free throw. For only the second time in the Celtics' past 14 games, Pierce failed to score 30 points. The captain's impressive point totals, which included a banked 3-pointer for a victory over Indiana, a pair of decisive free throws at Staples Center after a call against Kobe Bryant, and an overtime buzzer-beater against a double team in Washington, had to end sometime.

Kevin Garnett is still thinking - and talking - defense first. But Garnett’s offensive production has been extraordinary lately, and it has coincided with the Celtics’ eight-game winning streak. The combination of Garnett’s two-way play, plus a strong fourth quarter by Rajon Rondo, led the way as Boston earned a 98-89 win over the Milwaukee Bucks last night at TD Garden. Garnett scored 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting, and is now 50 for 65 (.778) from the field in his last six games.

Stuck in neutral all night long and unable to shake a mid-level team that came here having lost three in a row and seven out of eight, the Celtics found a new gear and made all the requisite plays at both ends of the floor last night to emerge with a 98-89 victory. By the way, it’s official. You know you have a very good team when you’re 17-4 and are sitting on an eight-game winning streak and all anyone can talk about...

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- McDonald's Corp. yesterday reported another month of strong worldwide sales, sending its stock up modestly to its highest closing price in 2 years. The world's largest restaurant company said sales from restaurants open more than a year rose 6.1 percent worldwide and 7.5 percent in the United States, where its Best Chance Monopoly game boosted results for a second straight October. The monthly gains were less spectacular than the ones reported a year ago, when McDonald's had easy comparisons against a down year in 2002.
