Central Maine Power says it's restored power to nearly all of the 6,000 customers in Cumberland, Androscoggin and Somerset counties who were without power earlier in the day. The utility says a transmission line coming out of the Yarmouth substation was out, causing the problem. The total number of customers affected, more than 6,000 Sunday morning, was down to 19 by mid-afternoon.

Maine's largest utility is being recognized for its efforts in restoring power to hundreds of thousands of customers who were left in the dark by Tropical Storm Irene. The Edison Electric Institute has presented Central Maine Power Co. with its Emergency Recovery Award to recognize its response in restoring electric service to 364,000 customers. Tropical Storm Irene's high winds and heavy rain knocked out power to homes and businesses and washed out bridges and roads when it rolled into Maine in late August.

PORTLAND, Maine - Maine regulators put three utilities on the path to distribute electricity harnessed from tides at the nation's eastern tip Tuesday, a key milestone in a bid to turn the natural rise and fall of ocean levels into power. The Maine Public Utilities Commission set terms for a contract that would be in place for 20 years. The regulators also directed the three utilities to negotiate with Ocean Renewable Power Co. to put electricity onto the grid this summer, the first long-term power purchase agreements for tidal energy in the United States.

Central Maine Power Co. has begun construction on a new 39-mile transmission line. The $33 million line will extend from Moscow to Benton. Company officials say it will enhance the reliability of power in Somerset County and be able to accommodate wind-generated electricity in the future. The line will consist of about 465 utility poles, each 70 to 80 feet high, and is being built parallel to an existing line in an established transmission corridor. Around 145,000 Maine electric utility customers are without power due to the heavy, wet snowfall. Central Maine Power Co. says about 130,000 homes and businesses, mostly in the state's southern counties, are without service. That's down from up a high of 145,000 earlier Sunday. Bangor Hydro Electric Co., meanwhile, says nearly 15,000 customers are without power, about double the earlier figure.

Maine utility officials say they've trimmed the number of power outages left by Tropical Storm Irene to about 3,700 customers. Central Maine Power Co. says most of the remaining outages are in York, Cumberland and Oxford counties. About 280,000 CMP customers had lost electrical service at one time or another due to the weekend storm. The utility says Irene's winds caused outages in 336 towns across all 14 counties served by the company. On Thursday, there are customers without power in 34 towns.

A pre-Thanksgiving snowstorm has knocked out power to more than 10,000 homes and business around Maine. The National Weather Service said snow was falling across much of the state yesterday, with more than 10 inches recorded before noon in Durham, Otisfield, Hope, Bethel, and Sebago. Southern coastal areas were getting primarily rain. Central Maine Power was reporting more than 9,800 outages around midday, with many of those caused by vehicles sliding off roads and into power poles.

While thousands of electric customers in southern New England continue to await restoration of service a week after the Halloween snowstorm, everybody affected in the three states north country have had their power back for days or soon will. In Maine, the two utilities that experienced roughly 150,000 outages say power's been restored to everyone in the state. Central Maine Power Co. said all affected customers had service restored earlier this week. Bangor Hydro-Electrict Co. says their outages were restored within 24 hours.

Central Maine Power estimates that more than 28,000 customers were without power at some point during the storm. By 9 p.m., fewer than 200 customers were still in the dark, and crews were doing final repairs to lines serving customers in several towns. CMP completed its own power restoration efforts in Maine by Tuesday afternoon following a freak October snowstorm that knocked down tree limbs and power lines. Hours later, CMP dispatched two dozen crews to help Public Service of New Hampshire, and another six crews joined them on Friday. A group of Central Maine Power ratepayers says it's going to the state's highest court in its fight against the utility's use of so-called "smart meters" The Public Utilities Commission this summer dismissed a 19-person complaint that challenged CMP's smart-meter program, in which it's replacing 600,000 traditional electric meters with wireless digital devices. The PUC allows CMP customers to opt out of using the meters at a cost of $12 a month, but the commission dismissed the complaint raising concerns about safety, privacy and other issues.
