By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff JUPITER, Fla. — Bobby Valentine said moments ago that Carl Crawford's left wrist has been responding to rest and therapy and that he and the medical staff will meet tomorrow to map out a plan going forward. "Saw Carl this morning," Valentine said. "He said he felt very good. He's not experiencing any pain. We're going to all meet tomorrow morning and figure out a nice plan so he doesn't overdo it on his way back. "

Carl Crawford has a sprained ligament in his throwing elbow and the Boston Red Sox left fielder will remain sidelined for a while. The team released a statement Thursday night saying Crawford's diagnosis was made by the Red Sox medical staff and confirmed by Dr. James Andrews. Crawford received a Platelet Rich Plasma injection and will be shut down from baseball activity "during the initial phase of his treatment. " The club did not announce a timetable for Crawford's return, but he is expected to miss at least another month or two — maybe more.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Carl Crawford's speedy return from surgery on his left wrist has hit a roadblock. Crawford did not take any swings today and has been put on medication because of inflammation in his wrist. "I'm always concerned when there's a setback. I don't know how bad it is. But according to the doctor it doesn't look that bad," Crawford said. "I was feeling real good, too. I wasn't expecting this. " Crawford said the pain started on Wednesday when he did several rounds of bunting drills.

CHICAGO — Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford has what the Red Sox are calling a "sprain" of his ulnar collateral ligament. A conservative treatment was recommended, meaning rehabilitation as opposed to surgery. He also received a platelet rich plasma injection to try and speed the healing process. The Red Sox did not issue a timetable for Crawford. But sources have told the Globe that Crawford could miss up to three months. Crawford started the season on the disabled list recovering from surgery on his left wrist.

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff FORT MYERS, Fla. — Via Bobby Valentine, Red Sox trainer Rick Jameyson reports that the swelling in Carl Crawford's left wrist has gone down and he has improved range of motion. "There's progress," Valentine said. Crawford has been shut down from swinging with his left wrist for a few days after overdoing it. "Pretty soon, I hope in the next couple of days" said Crawford when asked when he might start swinging again. "I took it over the edge and I have to slow it down.

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford had surgery on his left wrist in Arizona today. GM Ben Cherington said Crawford should be recovered to play "the bulk" of the season. The surgery was done in Arizona by Dr. Donald Sheridan. It was Sheridan who operated on Crawford in 2008 to fix a tendon issue in his right hand. Crawford felt soreness when he started his offseason hitting workouts around Jan. 1. He had an MRI that showed cartilage damage, and arthroscopic surgery was recommended.

CHICAGO - There's often a fear when a player seeks a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews for an elbow problem that Tommy John surgery is imminent. Carl Crawford's elbow problem is bad, but not that bad. The good news/bad news is that the Red Sox outfielder does not need surgery, but it may be up to three months before he gets back on the field, according to a team source. The key phrase is "up to. " Crawford must show he can throw all out from the outfield before he's activated.

MINNEAPOLIS — Carl Crawford has yet to be examined by Dr. James Andrews, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said today. That visit is expected to come in the next day or two. General manager Ben Cherington said the injury is more of a sprain than tendinitis. But others in the organization are concerned that it could be something worse. MINNEAPOLIS - Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Wednesday that outfielder Carl Crawford is going to see Dr. James Andrews on "a fact-finding mission" to determine exactly what is wrong with his left elbow. That examination is expected to take place before the end of the week. Crawford has been on the disabled list all season recovering from surgery on his left wrist, but his elbow became a bigger problem earlier this month. Crawford was given an MRI in Boston and shut down from throwing in extended spring training games.

MINNEAPOLIS — Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford will be getting a second opinion on his injured left elbow from Dr. James Andrews, ESPN reported. Bobby Valentine said on Tuesday night that Crawford would be getting a second opinion and then ESPN's Buster Olney reported Wednesday that it would be coming from Andrews. Valentine was evasive in talking about the injury other than to say he think it was "anything major. " One of Crawford's agents, Brian Peters, did not return messages seeking comment.
