WASHINGTON -- The United States banned poultry from mainland British Columbia yesterday because of a case of bird flu, although Canadian officials said it wasn't the virulent form more common to Southeast Asia that has been blamed for more than 60 human deaths. The governments of Taiwan and Japan indicated that they would take similar action. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Sunday that a duck at a commercial poultry farm in British Columbia had tested positive for bird flu. The first-ever transgender contestant to compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant has lost her bid to win the title. Jenna Talackova, 23, competed with 61 contestants Saturday night. She was among the final 12 contestants. Talackova, who was born a male, underwent a sex change four years ago. The Vancouver, British Columbia, native was initially denied entry to Canada's pageant because she was not a natural-born female. Donald Trump, who runs the Miss Universe Organization, subsequently overruled that decision.

The actor who played a son of ranch owner Barbara Stanwyck on the 1960s Western "The Big Valley," has died. Peter Breck was 82. Breck died Monday in Vancouver, British Columbia, after a long illness, his wife, Diane, announced on the website The Big Valley Writing Desk. A native of Haverhill, Mass., Breck was also a regular on the TV Westerns "Maverick" and "Black Saddle. " He had guest roles on series from the 1950s through the early 2000s including "Perry Mason," "The Virginian" and "Fantasy Island.

Faking her pregnancy was the high school project that keeps paying off for one Washington state teenager. Gaby Rodriguez of Toppenish was 17 last April when she told a high school assembly that she'd faked her baby bump for the past six months to see how the community would react. Police say a 3-year-old Canadian boy was returned safe to his own home four days after he was abducted. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said Sunday that Kienan Hebert was returned by the suspect to his home in Sparwood, British Columbia, after an emotional plea from his family. Police say someone called the police emergency dispatcher and told authorities they would find the missing boy at the home from where he was abducted. They believe the suspected kidnapper brought him back there.

Police in Vancouver, British Columbia, say a human foot inside a running shoe has washed ashore, the latest in roughly a dozen such cases since 2007. Police say the foot and leg bone were seen late Tuesday afternoon floating along the shore of Vancouver's False Creek. Police so far have no theories about how the foot ended up in the water. In the past four years, about a dozen feet encased in shoes have washed up on beaches near Vancouver, along the southern Georgia Strait and off Washington state.

Brandon Miller got the offense going again with a leadoff single before coming around to score on Landon Breon's two-run single. Miller, Pennsylvania's 12-year-old sparkplug, finished the scoring in the frantic first with an RBI infield single.

Until very recently, he would have been recognized on the street in Finland more readily than in downtown Boston. Go back further. His parents hocked their wedding rings at one point to raise money in support of young Timmy's career. The Phoenix Coyotes have signed defenseman Tyler Eckford and goalie Curtis McElhinney to one-year contracts. Terms of the deals Monday were not disclosed. McElhinney has played four NHL seasons with Ottawa, Anaheim and Calgary, going 18-26-4 record with a 3.13 goals-against average in 67 games. A 28-year-old from London, Ontario, McElhinney played a career-high 28 games with the Senators and Ducks, with a record of 9-13-1, two shutouts and a 2.99 goals-against average.

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on a three-year NHL entry level contract. The deal was completed Saturday with Nugent-Hopkins, who was chosen No. 1 overall by the Oilers at last month’s NHL draft. He will participate in the team’s development camp that begins Monday. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound British Columbia native was also drafted first overall by Red Deer of the Western Hockey League. He made his debut with the Rebels as an underage player in the 2008-09 season when he had six points in five games.
