As strange as this may sound for a reliever, Brian Wilson actually finds comfort in chaos. The hairier the situation, the more the San Francisco closer with the distinctive black beard bears down. Wilson worked his way into a very sticky situation on Thursday, only to escape with his first save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. The adventurous 32-pitch final inning was just another day on the mound for the reliever who always seems to load the bases before going to work.

No win for the ages. Or, for that matter, the aged. Madison Bumgarner scattered four hits over 7 1-3 innings and took a no-hit bid into the sixth Thursday in the San Francisco Giants' 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. At 49, Moyer failed in his second attempt to become the oldest pitcher to win a major league game. Moyer (0-2) surrendered four runs, two of them earned, and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings. He walked one, struck out three and hit a batter before leaving to a standing ovation in the sixth.

Matt Cain's job stability is now in excellent shape for years to come. On Tuesday night, he pitched with a clear mind. Cain struck out six in five innings to cap an unbeaten spring, delivering in a 3-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics a day after the two-time All-Star agreed to a $127.5 million, six-year contract that is the richest in baseball history for a right-hander. All along, Cain (4-0) insisted he wanted to resolve his situation one way or another before opening day — and the Giants came through with a big pay day. "Yeah, it's a...

A packed house of 10,900 got to see a former AL Cy Young Award winner and a three-time NL All-Star closer in action Sunday in the San Francisco Giants' 7-5 spring training win over the Seattle Mariners. Dark-bearded closer Brian Wilson got a standing ovation from Giants fans at their spring training home as he jogged to the mound to start the fourth inning. Wilson, who said he noticed the cheering, allowed a hit but finished his nine-pitch day with a strikeout-throwout double play.

The San Francisco Giants have activated closer Brian Wilson from the 15-day disabled list. Wilson was placed on the disabled list Aug. 21, a move retroactive to five days earlier, because of a right elbow strain. It was his second stint on the DL this year. He missed the beginning of the year with a left oblique strain. Manager Bruce Bochy plans on returning Wilson to the closer role as early as Tuesday. Wilson is 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA in 55 games this season. He has 35 saves in 40 chances.

Giants outfielder Nate Schierholtz tested his fractured right foot Friday and is still too sore to play a full game. San Francisco's brass was waiting until Schierholtz underwent an exam from a team doctor later Friday before deciding whether to put yet another key player on the disabled list. The defending World Series champion Giants placed five players on the DL during their recent 4-6 road trip and six others missed time with injuries. Schierholtz went without a walking boot Friday for the first time this week and did some early sprint work in left field,...
