Between the twin poles of a greasy diner two-over-easy and a chichi hotel Benedict Nouveau lies the sweet equator of morning fare: the affordable, delicious, unpretentious, yet inventive breakfast. It’s a staple of West Coast mornings but weirdly rare here. Just slightly west of Boston, however, there’s good news for fans of the creatively filled omelets, toothsome French toast, pancakes, and cheerful decor that characterize the genre: not one but two little breakfast oases, tucked away along Route 20. That’s Main Street to you — in Watertown for The Spot Cafe, or Waltham for In a Pickle Restaurant.

CHICAGO — Subway is joining the increasingly crowded breakfast scramble in a move the sandwich chain hopes will help add customers and sales. Almost all of Subway’s 23,000 US restaurants will begin selling the meal April 5. When they do, the largest US restaurant chain by number of outlets will be a big player in the breakfast game. “There are a number of other competitors of ours that are trying to suss out the breakfast opportunity, and I’d rather be in the market before they get there,’’ said Tony Pace, chief marketing officer at the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust.

Sometimes one breakfast isn't enough. So why not sneak in a second or a third? On-the-go Americans increasingly are consuming their morning calories over several hours instead of sitting down to devour a plate of pancakes, bacon and eggs in one sitting. The case of the morning munchies is being fueled by the belief that it's healthier to eat several smaller meals instead of three squares a day. What qualifies as a snack or a meal is a matter of perspective, of course. But food companies are rolling out smaller bites that feed the growing appetite for morning snacks.

BRANDON, Vt. -- Blame the rain, the traffic, and MapQuest. I arrived so late at The Inn on Park Street that innkeeper Judy Bunde -- and everyone else in the place -- had already gone to bed. That was fine by me. The front door was unlocked. But that still left one not-so-small question: Which room was mine? The door to the large downstairs guest room was wide-open, the nightstand lights were on, and little cookies and water awaited on a table inside. This had to be the one. I popped one of the chocolate macaroons in my mouth, sighed with pleasure, and then scarfed down the other one,...

By Hilary Nangle, Globe Correspondent Considering a trip to Portland, Maine, America's Foodiest Small Town? Reserve in advance to check in at the Pomegranate Inn , an elegant, art-filled 1884 Italianate mansion-turned-B&B. Innkeeper Dana Moos keeps to the art theme at breakfast. Moos, author of the newly published The Art of Breakfast: How to Bring B&B Entertaining Home (Down East Books, 2011), considers the breakfast plate as her palette.       "It's about looking at a plate of food as a composition and balancing colors, textures, and flavors,"...

Speakers at Boston's annual breakfast honoring Martin Luther King Jr. said the life of the civil rights leader can inspire people to put aside their differences and serve others. About 800 people attended the event at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center on Monday. Gov. Deval Patrick said faith is about more than what people say, it's also about what they do. He urged people to find opportunities to serve, maybe by helping a neighbor or writing a letter to those serving abroad in the military.

Those who have spent quality time at breakfast joints and diners (not to be confused with high-end restaurants taking a stab at brunch) will tell you that you should not judge morning-meal establishments by their décor or service. Some of the best diners look rough around the edges and have servers who grunt, glare, and silently judge you if you make a high-maintenance request. Knowing this, we were unfazed when the first 15 minutes of our visit to the new Somerville breakfast spot Danny's Diner included a grunt when we asked for decaf coffee (apparently, that was a no-go at...
