For General Motors, the price isn't right when it comes to an ad during next year's Super Bowl. The Detroit automaker said Friday that it won't be advertising on the Feb. 3 spectacle because of a steep price hike demanded by CBS, the network broadcasting the game. "We understand the reach the Super Bowl provides, but with the significant increase in price, we simply can't justify the expense," GM marketing chief Joel Ewanick said in a statement. A person with knowledge of advertising costs said Friday that CBS wants 25-to-30-percent more for air time than NBC charged during...

Like a little kid with a brand new toy, Eli Manning couldn't wait. "You're up on stage getting the box," Manning said Wednesday night, "and you wonder how quickly you can get off stage and open the box and get the ring on. " Manning and his New York Giants teammates received their Super Bowl rings at Tiffany's, and the jewelry was as impressive as the Giants' run through the NFL playoffs last winter. It was the second title in four years for Manning and the Giants, and the fourth overall in the Super Bowl era for the franchise.

Fred Flintstone bowled. So did Ralph Kramden and The Dude from "The Big Lebowski. " Over the 5,200 years-and-counting the game's been around, almost everyone has. None of them is a match for Pete Weber. "When I was younger, I always wished I could be more like Fred Couples the golfer, you know, more cool, calm and collected," Weber said over the telephone Tuesday. "I wouldn't get bashed as much. But somebody has got to be the villain. " Weber also happens to be one of the five greatest bowlers ever, something he's determined not to let the rest of us forget.

By Zuri Berry, Globe Staff INDIANAPOLIS -- With legacies on the line in Indianapolis, it's fitting that two teams with so much history, both this season and in the Super Bowl, face each other in the culmination of the 2011-12 season and playoffs. Tom Brady can join Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana as only the third quarterback in NFL history to win four Super Bowls if he can lead his New England Patriots to a win over the New York Giants at Lucas Oil Stadium today. Brady, who has 16 career postseason wins, would also pass Montana for most wins in the...

Have NFL fans seen the last of the Pro Bowl? The game could be suspended next year, two people familiar with discussions said Thursday. While Roger Goodell is at it, he should vacate the New Orleans Saints' 2010 Super Bowl title, earned while the Saints had a bounty system for deliberately injuring opposing players. It was bad enough the system existed for the last three seasons. But players and coaches also engaged in a cover-up. Goodell, the commissioner of the National Football League, said without hesitation in an interview Wednesday on the NFL Network, "We were misled, there denials throughout that period. Clearly we were lied to. We investigated this back in 2010.

ALBUQUERQUE - The locker room was filled with laughter as the Harvard basketball team prepared for Thursday's NCAA Tournament game against Vanderbilt. But there were no diagrams of plays or a breakdown of the Commodores on the blackboard. Instead, Wesley Saunders, a 6-foot-5-inch freshman guard, was playing the word game Hangman. As the players guessed letters and still couldn't come up with the word, Saunders heard the taunts and jeers. "Maybe," he said with a smile as he filled in what he thought were the letters of pulchritudinous.
