POCANTICO HILLS, N.Y. — The first bite arrived when the waiter set down a wooden rectangle displaying a "picket fence" of upside-down nails, each holding a dolly-size vegetable — a baby carrot, a broccoflower tip, a mini radish, and a tiny wand of fennel. It was close to 7 on a Saturday night in late October and our party of five had just settled into our cocktails in the candlelit dining room of Blue Hill at Stone Barns restaurant 25 miles north of Manhattan. "Just eat them with your fingers," said our waiter, pointing to the petite vegetable centerpiece.

While many eyes in the high school football world are focusing on players such as Everett's Jonathan DiBiaso, as he chases Tom Colombo's coveted state passing touchdowns record, or BC High's Preston Cooper, as he leads the charge for a resurgent Eagles team, other spectators have their sights on a Division 4A team and its prolific, young runner, Vincent Burton. Burton, the Globe's Division 4 Player of the Year last season, ran for 1,549 yards a year ago for Blue Hills, scoring 30 touchdowns and 202 points, for first place in the division by far (runner-up Laquane Bradham of West Roxbury had 12 touchdowns...

The Warriors (8-0, 3-0) moved into sole possession of first place heading into next week's league battle with undefeated Tri-County. "[The win] was real important," said Blue Hills coach Ed Catabia. "Next week we host Tri-County, which is a good team. It could be another battle next week," he said. With more than 4 inches of water on the field just hours before the game, both teams came out of the gates...

1. FOWL MEADOW This wetland area, which was almost paved over in 1967 in an attempt to run Interstate 95 straight into Boston, is home to a host of wildlife and offers easy biking along 2-mile Burma Road. The Fowl Meadow Path takes you down to the banks of the Neponset River at one end and into a swamp on the other. In high summer, when the marsh reeds rise overhead, the air is intoxicatingly thick with the scent of wild grapes, and dragonflies shimmer in the sultry air. (Tip: Paul's Bridge, a stone span that dates from the 19th century, is located at the northern end...

South Boston learned the hard way it can't win a game when it can't hang onto the ball. The Knights fumbled eight times, losing seven, as Blue Hills rolled to a 40-8 win at Moakley Field, picking up the nonleague victory before next week's Mayflower Large matchup against rival Southeastern. "This was a good test for us to find out just how good we really are," said Blue Hills coach Ed Catabia. He didn't have to wait long. Steven Snyder took the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown and Vincent Burton pounded in the 2-point rush for an 8-0 lead 20 seconds...

WALTHAM - Sprinting untouched from 56 yards - with nothing but green turf between him and the end zone - Cathedral quarterback Matt Owens, with the ball snug in his right arm, raised his left fist to signify a touchdown late in the fourth quarter in the Division 4A Super Bowl at Bentley University. Was it unabashed enthusiasm or unsportsmanlike conduct? The call was the latter. The touchdown was negated. Instead of having an 18-16 lead with just more than six minutes to play, Cathedral was forced to take the ball from the spot of the foul, at the...

On overcast days, when they finally dip beneath the cloud cover, they look like spaceships, gliding from the heavens with their lights ablaze. And they're coming right at you. This is how it feels, anyway, on the stretch of beach and boardwalk just before South Boston's Castle Island — about 19 benches out from the parking lot, to be precise — which is one of the best places around to plane-watch. When the wind is right, jets big and small approach Logan International Airport from the south-southwest, and their course brings them...

The Bears accomplished that task and will play Fenway Tuesday for the state championship after taking down formidable Blue Hills, 70-63, Friday night. "That was our dream right there," coach Dave Harrison said. "For three years we've been talking about that. We've got eight seniors that built the program and turned it all around.
