I like baking, and I generally like baking books even when they're fussy. So I took an instant shine to the new pie book by Gesine Bullock-Prado (bakery owner, multiple-cookbook author, blogger, and ex-Hollywooder; she's Sandra Bullock's sister). "Pie It Forward" is a loose wordplay on "pay it forward," being grateful for something good, and paying it forward to others. The book has gorgeous photography, and there are cute little sidebars offering advice: say, how to salvage overwhipped cream.

FOR THOSE interested in doing a better job of managing people - supporting them, inspiring them to greatness - there is plenty of advice out there. The problem is that it is not clear which advice to follow. Management philosophies are like apple pies; they all sound good. The issue is a vital one, and not just for companies that want to improve their bottom line. A large part of what people do is done in groups. If there are indeed bedrock principles of management, then their wide application could do a lot of good for a lot of people.

If for some reason you find yourself here in the digital world on Thanksgiving morning, instead of out there in the scent-filled land of turkey and gratitude, don’t expect to find any relief. I’m here to talk about apple pie. If there is one place that does Thanksgiving, it is New England. (Though I did enjoy a very passable Thanksgiving feast in 2000 at a friend’s apartment in the fourth arrondissement of Paris, juste en face, as the French might say, of the externally-plumbed Pompidou Center.

If you've been reading some of the bad reviews of 213's debut, I'll tell you what: A whole lot of critics have gotten it wrong. The album brings together two of hip-hop's most talented elder statesmen: Snoop Dogg, who has, despite his incessant weed smoking and occasional porn peddling, become as American as apple pie, and Nate Dogg (no relation), the perennial hip-hop hook-singer whose silky and soulful delivery has made raunchy rap choruses sound like the romantic croons of Teddy Pendergrass.

The Thanksgiving celebration began as a community event and evolved into a holiday for family and friends. It's a day of tradition, when the cooks in the group bring a dish they have become known for, when side dishes are in abundance, when the dessert table is laden with pies and other sweet specialties. We started the Recipe Box Project earlier this year so readers could share their favorite family recipes. Thanksgiving seemed like an ideal time to ask for your recipes, which we did last month.

An Army sergeant accused of killing a Falmouth man while the two served in Iraq will face a hearing next month that will determine whether the case should go before a court martial, according to the victim's family. Sergeant Brent McBride allegedly shot Sergeant Matthew Gallagher in the head on June 26 in the room they shared overseas, according to Gallagher's family. But Gallagher's parents said they did not learn the cause of their son's death until almost a month later, when they received an autopsy report.

Makes one 9-inch open-faced pie We were intrigued by this tart sent in by Melinda Kessler Spratlan of Amherst. "My mother, Nelle McFarland Kessler, was raised on a farm in east central Indiana," she writes. "She and her mother, Bessie, often baked pies for the farm hands when they came in from the early morning chores. This is her recipe for apple pie. My mother always baked it for Thanksgiving dinner, and I have continued the tradition in my family. " We tried the pie with chunks, and then with thin slices arranged in concentric circles, and far preferred the...

Papabile . Biophilia . Do-ocracy . Moffle . If you don't recognize any of these, don't worry - they're not (yet) household words. Papabile is used to refer to those cardinals who are considered good candidates for popehood. Biophilia - a word coined by biologist E.O. Wilson - is the idea that we have a deep human need to connect with nature. A do-ocracy is an organizational structure in which people choose what to do, and then do it. And a moffle ?
