Zabian Dowdell scored 20 points and four of his teammates were in double figures as Virginia Tech beat visiting Miami, 73-57, for its first 20-win season in 11 years and a bye in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. Coleman Collins scored 15 points for Tech (20-8, 10-4), Jamon Gordon had 13, Deron Washington 12, and A.D. Vassallo 11. Dowdell also had eight rebounds and three of Tech's eight steals. Denis Clemente led the Hurricanes (11-17, 4-10) with 20 points, 13 in the first half.

Adrian Joseph scored 17 points and hit two big second-half 3-pointers, leading Virginia to a 73-70 victory yesterday against visiting Florida State. The Cavaliers (18-7, 9-3) are tied for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with fourth-ranked North Carolina, which won at Boston College last night. Virginia Tech, which plays at North Carolina State today, is a half-game back at 8-3, as is BC at 9-4. The Seminoles (17-10, 5-8) lost their fourth in a row despite 30 points and 16 rebounds by Al Thornton.

Freshman point guard Bobby Frasor scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, Tyler Hansbrough converted all 14 free throws on his way to 20 points, and the 25th-ranked Tar Heels defeated the No. 13 Wolfpack , 82-69, yesterday in Chapel Hill, N.C. David Noel added 14 points for North Carolina (9-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), which won its fifth straight in this Tobacco Road rivalry.

Ex-Celtics great Larry Bird has filed a lawsuit alleging a couple who bought his former home in southern Indiana are improperly using his name to promote a bed-and-breakfast. The lawsuit, filed in US District Court in Evansville, claims Georgianna Lincoln and Christopher Cooke did not have permission to use the Hall of Famer's name with the property and are profiting off his trademark by stating the home belonged to him. "Everybody in French Lick calls it Larry Bird's home," Cooke said.

With the score tied at 93, Brandon Roy hit a pull-up jumper for the Blazers, but San Antonio's Roger Mason answered with a 22-footer to tie it again.
