The three "American Idol" finalists earned nearly uniform votes of confidence Wednesday from the show's judges. Now it's the audience tally that will determine which two compete for glory in next week's finale. If the night had a teacher's pet, it was Joshua Ledet, 20, who delivered what Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler deemed flawless performances. Each contestant performed three songs: One picked by the judges, one by producer-mentor Jimmy Iovine, and one chosen by the singers themselves.

Adam Lambert was commended for knowing who he was while competing on “American Idol.’’ The eighth-season runner-up might want to let his handlers in on it. From his provocative performance on the “American Music Awards’’ Sunday night to the album-by-committee feel of his debut, his musical identity isn’t completely clear. For pop fans that committee is a blue-ribbon panel that includes Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, Lady Gaga, Green Day producer Rob Cavallo, and Swedish mastermind Max Martin among many others.

The mother of country singer Mindy McCready wants her grandson back. Gayle Inge and her husband, Michael, said yesterday in a statement that their 5-year-old grandson, Zander, should be returned to them in Florida. Under Florida law, Inge is Zander's legal guardian. In November, McCready took the boy out of Florida without the permission of Florida's courts. The singer and her son were found in Arkansas. McCready told the Associated Press that she took the boy because she feared he was being abused at her mother's home.
