Above all, they stressed the risks - and ways to minimize them. But with an audience of young adults eager to see the world and seize adventure, it was hard to know whether the warnings truly hit home. "I think the message gets through," said Sheila Bayne, who directs the university's study-abroad program.

Residents on Whitten Street in Dorchester heard piercing screams late Sunday morning and then watched in horror as rescuers in the middle of the street tried to revive a 5-year-old boy who had been struck by a vehicle, witnesses said. Boston police said the boy, whom authorities did not identify, was hit shortly before 11:45 a.m. on Whitten Street. He was rushed to Boston Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, said police. The driver had not been cited or charged as of Sunday evening, they said.

A Bloomfield home suffered serious damage after a car slammed into it Wednesday night, sparking a fire. Fire officials say the accident occurred at about 11 p.m. on Tyler Street. The driver of the car was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford. His condition was not available Thursday morning. The residents of the home were not injured. It's not clear what caused the accident.

A male was admitted to Boston Medical Center with life-threatening injuries last night after a car accident in Roxbury, police said. Police received the call at approximately 7:18 p.m. about an accident at Melnea Cass Boulevard and Kerr Way, said police spokesman Officer Eddy Chrispin. No further information regarding the victim or the accident was immediately available.

A funeral Mass is being held for a Norfolk County deputy sheriff killed in a motorcycle crash last week. The service for Correction Officer Ryan Tvelia of Plainfield will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Church in North Attleborough. Tvelia was killed April 10 as he drove to Quincy to be part of the honor guard for the funeral of a fellow officer's mother. State police said Tvelia's police motorcycle collided with a car on Interstate 95 in Waltham and was struck by a second car. Tvelia was assigned to the Norfolk County jail in Dedham.

A 40-year-old woman was hospitalized after an early morning all-terrain vehicle accident in central Maine. The Maine Warden Service says Tricia LaBree, of Sangerville, lost control on an ATV trail in Dover-Foxcroft, and crashed into some trees. She was with two other ATV riders at the time, but they weren't involved in the accident. LaBree was taken to Mayor Regional Hospital, where officials said she was being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Wardens say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Jim Pomeroy, the first US motorcycle racer to win a World Championship Motocross event, was killed in a car accident. He was 53. Mr. Pomeroy died Sunday morning when his 1979 Jeep CJ5 went off the road near Tampico, about 20 miles west of his hometown of Yakima, hit a telephone pole wire and landed on its side, the Washington State Patrol said. His 9-year-old daughter, Jamie, was treated for minor injuries at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital and released, the troopers said in a news release.

The University of Massachusetts Boston community is mourning the death of associate professor Jalal Alamgir, who died Saturday in an accident while vacationing in Phuket, Thailand. Alamgir, 41, a native of Bangladesh, received tenure from UMass Boston last year. He earned a doctorate in political science from Brown University in 2000. He was also a fellow at the South Asia Initiative at Harvard University and researched issues including political justice in Bangladesh and Pakistan and the representation of values in Indian foreign policy.

HARTFORD - A teenage driver was arrested during the weekend after authorities said the distraction of a handheld cellphone caused her to fatally hit a jogger. Kenneth Dorsey, 44, an avid runner, was on a morning jog in Norwalk, Conn., and training for a marathon March 24, when he was fatally struck by the sport utility vehicle the girl was driving, according to his father, Leo Dorsey. The victim's father blames his death on "stupidity. David Ortiz was unhurt when he was involved in a minor traffic accident with another motorist Friday afternoon as he was making his way to Fenway Park. Ortiz admitted he was at fault after losing control of his Audi R8 after he stopped to get gas at the Shell station on the corner of Boylston and Ipswich streets. One person has died and another person is hospitalized following a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 89 in Vermont. State police say the northbound car crashed in Royalton early Saturday afternoon. The 21-year-old driver, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the crash site. The passenger, 29-year-old Steven Pierre of Manchester, N.H., was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Police say the crash is under investigation, but that witnesses reported that the car was traveling at high rate of speed before the accident.

BOSTON — Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz is unhurt after a minor car accident on his way to Fenway Park. WBZ-TV in Boston reported Ortiz was involved in the crash as he was leaving a gas station on Boylston Street on Friday afternoon. Boston police spokesman David Estrada said no injuries and only minor vehicle damage was reported. He didn't immediately have further details. The Red Sox also confirmed Ortiz was unhurt. A Boston police officer was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after he was involved in a motor vehicle accident in Roslindale yesterday, police said. The incident occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. near 4179 Washington St., according to Boston police spokesman Officer James Kenneally. The officer, who was escorting the Mayor's Christmas Trolley Tour on a motorcycle, was transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital. No further information was immediately available.
