By Zuri Berry, Globe Staff FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez didn't speak much to reporters following Saturday's game against the Denver Broncos, but he did say he was OK after appearing concussed in the fourth quarter. Hernandez caught four passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. But he made his contribution running the ball for the Patriots. He led the Patriots rushing with a 61 yards on five carries, including a 43-yard jaunt in the first quarter that led to the Patriots' first touchdown.

Essentially, the Patriots have the same cast of characters on offense heading into the playoffs as they did last year when the unit struggled in a loss to the Jets. Stevan Ridley's explosiveness brings an added dimension to the running game, but if there is one reason the Patriots will be tougher to defend this January, it is clearly Aaron Hernandez. The second-year tight end has developed to the point where he is a legitimate top option to go along with wide receiver Wes Welker and tight end Rob Gronkowski.

FOXBOROUGH - Aaron Hernandez started high-stepping about 10 yards out. He made sure Bills safety George Wilson could tell he was staring him down on the way to the end zone. Hernandez's 39-yard second-quarter touchdown yesterday made it 21-14; the Patriots still were pulling themselves out of the 21-point first-quarter hole they fell into in their regular-season finale. When Hernandez crossed the goal line, Wilson had a few words for him. Hernandez wasn't about to back down.

FOXBOROUGH - He saw the AFC conference trophy in the dressing room and the championship hat and shirt in his cubicle. And yet, Aaron Hernandez couldn't quite believe he was going to the only game that comes with a ring. "I feel great," the Patriots' factotum tight end-running back-blocker declared yesterday after his teammates had escaped the Ravens by a 23-20 margin in the final seconds to make it back to the Super Bowl after a three-year absence. "It's a dream come true. It hasn't hit me yet, but in the next few days it'll be real.
