WORCESTER- A Worcester Polytechnic Institute student accused of raping a female student over the weekend was ordered in Central District Court yesterday to stay away from all college property.
Gregory R. Gardner Jr., 22, of 7 Dean St., was arraigned on two counts of rape and one count each of kidnapping and indecent assault and battery on a person over 14. The charges stem from an incident that occurred Saturday night or Sunday morning in the parking lot of Bancroft Tower.
Worcester police were notified by WPI campus police at 4:15 a.m. Sunday. An 18-year-old woman who said she had been raped was at an area hospital receiving treatment.
The woman allegedly met Gardner at a party and later they got into his car. The two drove to the parking lot where the alleged rape occurred.
“He admitted that this victim was telling him to stop and saying no during the sexual encounter,’’ police said in a statement of facts on file in court. “Greg thought that this victim was really enjoying the sex even though she was telling him to stop.’’
Detectives spoke to Gardner at police headquarters.
In a statement released Monday, WPI officials said they take all matters concerning rape and sexual assault seriously. The college’s judicial board will review the case.
The newspaper does not name victims of sexual assault.
Gardner was released on $10,000 cash bail, the amount he posted after his arrest. He was ordered to stay away from the alleged victim in the case. Gardner will return to court on April 10.
