FORT MYERS, Fla. —Happy New Year. Pitchers and catchers report today. Baseball is officially here for the Red Sox.

Bobby Valentine will speak to the assembled media at 9 a.m. Josh Beckett and Jon Lester will follow later in the day.

The New York Times, the New York Post and Newsday are already on hand. Somehow I'm guessing they wouldn't have carved out time to come hear Gene Lamont. But Bobby V draws a crowd.

The actual first workout is not until Tuesday. But so many pitchers arrived early and are already on their schedules. As in any other job, people want to impress the new boss.
