Monday open thread: Valentine's musings

February 13, 2012|Robin Abrahams, Globe Staff

Mr. Improbable and I will be traveling this week, so instead of a Monday question, I thought I'd open up a thread for musings about Valentine's Day. (In other scheduling news, I will not be having a chat this week. I'll be doing one instead on February 29.)

Said travel is to a science conference that Mr. Improbable goes to every year at this time. This means that for the past 10 years or so, on Valentine's Day, I am either eating Ben & Jerry's and watching scary movies in my bathrobe alone, or listening to my husband entertain rapt audiences with descriptions of such romantic trifles as the Blonksy Device and the Fesmire Method for terminating intractable hiccups.

I feel as though I'm treading dangerously into Meredith's domain here, but I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on "romance." Let's leave V-Day itself aside, since it's a polarizing holiday. During the other 364 days a year, what are your thoughts on "romance"? Have you ever had a romantic evening planned for you, or have you planned one for a significant other? How did it turn out? What's the most romantic thing you've ever done or experienced?
