Fire officials said a two-alarm blaze at the Quincy Yacht Club Friday morning was likely burning for several hours before they received a call.

At 10:46 a.m., the Quincy Fire Department received a call from a commuter aboard an MBTA ferry who saw flames at the yacht club. Deputy Fire Chief Ed Fenby said the fire could have been burning for three or four hours before anyone realized it.

“We are assuming it was burning for a long time,” he said. “The char on the main beams underneath was substantial.”

The yacht club, at 1310 Sea St., is atop a pier over the water, Fenby said. The fire began with an electrical malfunction near an ice machine and eventually spread through the wall and up into the attic.

The fire was brought under control quickly, Fenby said, but an extensive amount of overhauling had to be done as well. Damage was estimated at about $200,000, according to Fenby.

No one was in the yacht club at the time of the fire. Fenby said one firefighter was treated for a minor injury.
