For a team that finished 4-8 last season, Boston College’s football coaching staff appears to be quite popular. Although no official announcement will come until tomorrow, new Rutgers coach Kyle Flood has used the BC staff as a personal shopping mall.
First, Flood tried to entice defensive coordinator Billy McGovern to come back to his native state. But McGovern declined, telling Rutgers that while he was still very much a New Jersey guy, his roots are also firmly planted at BC.
Then Flood approached Dave Brock, who took over as BC’s offensive coordinator last season when Kevin Rogers took a medical leave of absence. Brock then was shifted to special teams coach when BC coach Frank Spaziani hired Doug Martin as offensive coordinator in December. Brock, who once worked with Flood at Hofstra, now is expected to be named the Scarlet Knights’ offensive coordinator.
Flood wasn’t finished with BC. In need of a running backs coach, he targeted the Eagles’ Ben Sirmans.
When first contacted about the move on Thursday, Sirmans denied it. “Nothing but rumors,’’ he said. Well, a day later the rumors became reality when he agreed to join Flood’s staff. Flood still needs a defensive line coach, and may try to entice BC’s Jeff Comissiong to come aboard.
The raid on Spaziani’s staff continued when Temple’s Steve Addazio enticed BC wide receivers coach Ryan Day into becoming the Owls’ offensive coordinator. An official announcement is expected shortly. Day had been in the mix to become the Eagles’ offensive coordinator before they hired Rogers last winter.
When contacted yesterday, Spaziani said that as far as he was concerned nothing was official, and he would have no comment until announcements were made. With spring practice beginning in a week, Spaziani will need not only to begin getting his players ready for the season, but to fill out his coaching staff.

The Eagles expect to receive their schedule from the Atlantic Coast Conference in the next few days, with the opener against Miami on Labor Day weekend (most likely Sept. 1).
