The University of Massachusetts Lowell has unveiled plans for a seven-month celebration of Charles Dickens in honor of the famed author’s 200th birthday this month. Beginning March 30 and running through Oct. 20, “Dickens in Lowell’’ will explore his travels in America, including his 1842 visit to Lowell. The brainchild of UMass Lowell English professor Diana Archibald, the festival will be the largest of its kind in New England and one of the largest in the United States. The schedule of events will feature performances, speakers, family and community programs, and a major exhibition titled “Dickens and Massachusetts: a Tale of Power and Transformation.’’ Most events are free.
