The girls’ squad finished with 140 points, 71 points ahead of O’Bryant (69). Brighton had 40 points and English was fourth with 32. East Boston (20 points) rounded out the top five.
The Dragons won nine events on the girls’ side, and earned points in 11 of the 12 events. Monique Cox won the 300 and long jump for Latin Academy. The Dragons took the top two spots in the 55, 300 and 600-meter runs.
“We have a lot of great girls who put a lot of effort in, competing in indoor and outdoor track,’’ Leussler said. “Many of our girls have been running since they were in seventh grade.’’
The Dragons had 12 athletes qualify for the state tournament, the most the school has had in 10 years. One is Britney Firmin, who qualified in the 600 with a time of 1 minute, 48.38 seconds. She finished ahead of teammate Leigha Mills (1:52.69) yesterday.
The Latin Academy boys also dominated their field, finishing with 90 points to top South Boston’s 58. Charlestown (47) squeaked past Brighton (43) for third and Dorchester (32) finished out the top five.
The boys’ squad won four events, including Robert Finch’s victory in the mile. Finch finished in 4:56.19, the second time he has finished the mile in under five minutes in his career. He also qualified for the state tournament in the event.
The Dragons’ Tucker Gaye won the long jump at 20 feet 0.5 inches, 3 1/2 inches better than South Boston’s William Arrington, setting a league record and qualifying him for states.
Second-place South Boston won two events. Arrington took the 300, finishing at 36.40. Arrington also ran on the winning 4 x 400 relay team, with a time of 3:49.68, almost 10 seconds ahead of second-place Dorchester (3:59.51).
